In January 2026 Accenture agreed to buy the company, the deal closed in March, and founder Marc Warner walked away as Accenture's chief technology officer.

Founded in 2014 by Marc Warner, Angie Ma, and Andrew Brookes, Faculty built its name on high-stakes, human-led AI: the NHS Covid Early Warning System, mission-critical work for the UK Ministry of Defence, and a decision-intelligence platform called Frontier. Roughly 400 data scientists and AI engineers came with the acquisition, and they now sit inside the world's largest consultancy.

Faculty is an applied AI company. It builds and deploys machine-learning systems for organisations that operate under real constraints, from energy operators and insurers to defence and national security clients. The pitch is safe, human-led AI: models that inform expert decisions rather than replace them, with explainability and safety baked in from the design stage.

The work spans two modes. There is bespoke consulting, where multidisciplinary teams embed with a client to solve a specific problem, and there is Frontier, the productised platform that lets clients run decision intelligence at scale. A separate AI Safety practice red-teams frontier models for high-risk misuse, including biosecurity.

## Problems

**Getting AI out of the lab and into a regulated business**

Most of Faculty's clients do not have an AI problem so much as an execution problem. They know the technology matters but lack the foundational skills, infrastructure, and governance to move from pilots to production in industries where a wrong output has consequences. Faculty's own analysts put it bluntly: today's bottleneck is not the science, it is execution under real-world constraints.

So the company builds the plumbing as much as the models. That means secure GenAI platforms, containerised deployment, bias and fairness testing, and monitoring for models that drift when the equipment or data around them changes. For a leading insurer it built a custom GenAI platform and took the first use case live in four months.

Frontier 3 shipped in October 2025, and after the Accenture deal it joins Accenture's product suite, already powering clinical trial planning work with Novartis.

Around Frontier sit two other pillars: the bespoke Applied AI consulting practice, and the Fellowship programme, a selective scheme that retrains PhD academics into commercial data scientists and has produced more than 425 alumni. It is both a product and a recruiting engine.

## Business Model

**AI as a service, sold consulting-first**

Faculty makes money the way a high-end technical consultancy does: it wins engagements with government and enterprise clients, embeds teams to build and deploy AI, and layers its Frontier platform on top as the durable, licensable product. It has described the model as AI as a service.

Pricing is not published. Deals are custom, sold through Customer Directors who own revenue for a sector, so cost tracks the scope of each transformation programme rather than a per-seat list price.

**The UK's answer to Palantir, now with Accenture's reach**

Bloomberg framed Faculty as a UK Palantir rival, which captures the shape of the market: enterprise and government AI where domain depth and security clearance are the moat. Faculty's differentiators are its decade of applied focus, its deep public-sector and defence ties, and the Frontier platform as a technical spine.

The Accenture acquisition changes the competitive math entirely. Faculty's technical depth now sits behind the distribution of the world's largest consultancy, which is either a huge advantage or the moment the independent brand gets absorbed, depending on how the integration goes.

Faculty says it has worked with more than 350 global customers across a decade. The named work is what sells it: the NHS Covid Early Warning System, mission-critical projects for the UK Ministry of Defence, and a media and telecoms deployment that the company estimates protected around £10 million in revenue by routing the right call to the right agent.

Under chief commercial officer John Gibson, revenue has grown more than 20x. The clearest proof point of all is the exit: Accenture bought the whole company in early 2026.

## Funding

**From a £30m Apax round to a full Accenture buyout**

Faculty stayed relatively lean as a venture-backed company. Its largest round was £30 million from the Apax Digital Fund in 2021, which brought total investment to nearly £40 million, on top of earlier backing from GMG Ventures, LocalGlobe, and Skype founding engineer Jaan Tallinn.

Then came the real liquidity event. Accenture agreed to acquire Faculty outright in January 2026 and closed the deal that March. Terms were not disclosed.

Faculty's founding DNA is academic: Marc Warner was a physicist at Harvard, Angie Ma holds a PhD in physics and applied optics, and the Fellowship programme it built retrains PhDs into data scientists. Safety is not just compliance here, it is a business line. Faculty's AI Safety practice builds red-teaming tools like ARES, an automated system for probing frontier models in high-risk domains such as biosecurity, developed with backing from the Frontier Model Forum AI Safety Fund and in collaboration with SecureBio.
