We are a venture capital-backed company dedicated to transforming this industry. Control room operators require the most effective tools to perform their jobs safely and efficiently, while minimizing environmental impact and maximizing revenue. Considering that pilots have autopilot software, it's time for control room operators to have a comparable solution. ## About the Role We are looking for an Advanced Process Control Engineer who will be a technical authority on control automation. You will be responsible for leading the development and integration of advanced control algorithms with Crux software, industrial systems and workflows. The Advanced Process Control Engineer, reporting to the Advanced Process Control Engineer Lead, is a key role that blends leadership skills, personal skills, and technical expertise. You will join a team focused on delivering automation solutions to improve pipeline operations within control room environments. This role involves close collaboration with customer teams (Control operation, SCADA engineering) and internal teams (Deployment, Product, and Engineering) to ensure alignment on customer requirements and project delivery. Job Responsibilities - Advanced Control: Architect, implement, and tune advanced control strategies, such as Model Predictive Control (MPC), for pipeline systems - Discrete Logic: Design state machines for operational mode management, construct fail-safe conditions and safety checks, and protective interlocks - Control System Testing: Outline and execute test plans to validate controller performance and safety requirements, perform root cause analyses (RCAs), and troubleshoot errors or undesired behaviours in simulation-based and production environments - Algorithm Design: Create and help maintain tools for data analysis, system identification, empirical and physics-based model tuning - System Integration: Enable rapid integration and deployment of Crux products, by developing playbooks, standardizing processes and leveraging the latest engineering tools. - Quality Assurance: Ensure all deliverables meet the high safety and reliability standards required for heavy industry environments. - Relationship Building: Develop deep, trust-based relationships with client-side operators and technical leads. - Internal Synergy: Align cross-functional teams to ensure a unified delivery approach. ## Requirements - Bachelor’s degree in Chemical, Electrical, or Mechanical engineering or related field (post-graduate studies focusing on advanced control systems or MPC preferred) - Hold a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or be eligible to obtain licensure in Canada - Experience with control system design, controller tuning, execution of simulation-based testing, data processing and analysis, system integration - Familiarity with the process of system identification to develop empirical models of input-output relationships - Experience with writing specification documents, technical reports - Proficiency with Python and version control software (e.g. GitHub) Prior experience or knowledge of the following is considered an asset: - A reasonable understanding of hydraulic theory, fluid dynamics, numerical methods, optimization algorithms/dynamic programming - Experience with OPC communication protocols and/or SCADA systems - Experience with DNV Synergi Pipeline Simulator (SPS) or Atmos Simulation Suite for performing transient pipeline simulations ## What We Offer - Competitive compensation package, including equity - Comprehensive health benefits - Remote-first work environment - Flexible work arrangements - Professional development opportunities - Growth-mindset culture - A diverse and inclusive environment ## About CruxOCM ## Company Overview - **One-liner**: CruxOCM provides AI-powered industrial automation software that autonomously executes and optimizes control-room operations for oil and gas midstream pipelines and gathering systems. - **Entity Type**: Private (Series A; most recent round $17M led by M12 in 2024) - **Headquarters**: Calgary, Alberta, Canada - **Founded**: 2018 (co-founders’ own account; LinkedIn lists 2017) - **Founders**: Vicki Knott, P.Eng. (CEO) and Roger Shirt, PhD, P.Eng. (Senior Advisor & Co-founder) ## Core Business - **Primary industry**: Industrial automation software for the energy sector (oil & gas midstream) - **Target customers**: B2B, enterprise – pipeline operators, midstream companies, control-room teams - **Mission / purpose**: “AI-powered automation for industrial environments where failure is not an option — safer control-room operations, higher throughput, lower OPEX.” [cruxocm.com/about-us](https://cruxocm.com/about-us/) ## Products & Services - **pipeBOT™** – Closed-loop automation for pipeline operations; reduces tank excursions by 85%, lowers DRA cost by 2–4%, and lifts throughput by 2–7%. [cruxocm.com](https://cruxocm.com/) - **leanOPT™** – Continuous optimization module that reduces power cost up to 16% while holding contracted volume. [cruxocm.com](https://cruxocm.com/) - **maxOPT™** – Maximizes throughput on existing infrastructure without new capital. - **gatherBOT™** – Automation for gathering systems, extending the same platform to upstream/midstream boundaries. - **IAH™ (Industrial Autonomy Hub)** – The underlying platform that sits between existing SCADA/DCS infrastructure and execution apps, providing governed, physics-based autonomous control. [cruxocm.com](https://cruxocm.com/) ## Market Standing - **Valuation / Market Cap**: Not publicly disclosed - **Key Metric**: Annual Revenue of ~$7.2M (LinkedIn estimate; fiscal year end Dec 31); Total disclosed funding ~$26.6M (including $17M Series A, $2.6M venture, $6M venture, $350K pre-seed, CAD 7.6M seed) - **Notable Investors & Partners**: M12 (Microsoft’s Venture Fund – lead investor in Series A), Root Ventures, Angular Ventures, Bullpen Capital; deployed with midstream partners across North America - **Growth Signals**: 2–7% throughput uplift proven in production; 87% reduction in manual interventions; headcount of 31 employees (down 6.5% YoY); active job postings for engineering roles; remote-first across North America ## Competitive Advantages - **Physics-first AI**: Uses first-principles physics models, not black-box ML, keeping control inside real system constraints. - **Operator authority at every layer**: Every change is traced and requires human approval – no “rip-and-replace” of existing SCADA/DCS. - **Proven in mission-critical environments**: Deployed on live pipelines with measurable operational gains (safety, throughput, cost). - **Backed by Microsoft’s M12**: Strategic validation and access to enterprise channels. ## Strategic Focus - Scale the IAH™ platform to more asset types (beyond pipelines) and deepen autonomous execution capabilities. - Continue governed, operator-in-the-loop automation to help midstream companies increase profitability without new infrastructure. - Grow the engineering and field deployment teams to expand North American footprint. ## Why Work Here - **Remote-first**: Fully remote across North America with hubs in Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, and the Bay Area. [cruxocm.com/careers](https://cruxocm.com/careers/) - **Culture**: “Clear ownership. Thoughtful execution.” – emphasis on direct communication, owning outcomes, designing for clarity and stability. Rated 5.0/5.0 on employer reviews (3 reviews) with top marks for culture (5.0) and compensation (4.5). [linkedin.com/company/crux-ocm](https://linkedin.com/company/crux-ocm) - **Engineering focus**: Mission-critical systems where success is measured in throughput, safety, and reliability – not just shipping fast.
