Founded in 2017, we’re delivering low-cost and large-scale energy storage and producing battery materials in the U.S. for the first time, all from batteries we already have. Position Summary: The EHS Manager – Construction directly manages a team of on-site Construction Safety/EHS Specialists across multiple concurrent construction projects within the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) group, reporting to the EHS Director. The position translates the EHS Director's program strategy into standardized operational execution across projects, and is accountable for the hiring input, coaching, performance management, and day-to-day supervision of the site EHS Specialists who report to it. This role partners with customers, project GCs, and functional peers at utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) construction projects to ensure client EHS requirements are fully met and to help prevent onsite incidents. The position is responsible for standardizing EHS program implementation, hazard and risk assessment, incident investigation, training and toolbox talks, and ensuring regulatory compliance (OSHA/EPA/DOT/state) across the project portfolio while driving a zero-injury program across multiple construction sites, and for reporting program-wide safety performance and risk trends to the EHS Director. ## Responsibilities - Directly manage a team of on-site Construction Safety/EHS Specialists across multiple concurrent energy storage projects in the U.S., including hiring input, onboarding, coaching, performance management, and offboarding. - Manage Manufacturing related EPC projects at BMC1 and BMC2. - Translate EHS Director-level program strategy into standardized operational processes and site-level execution across all projects in the portfolio - Recommend and establish EHS procedures, standards, and audit/training programs that affect the department or multiple disciplines, rather than a single site - Serve as the primary escalation point for serious incidents and regulatory issues across the assigned project portfolio, and report program-wide safety performance, incident trends, and staffing needs to the EHS Director on a recurring cadence - Manage relationships with client EHS leadership and GC safety leadership at the program level across projects, including coordination on safety-related scope and requirements - Coordinate site-specific safety plan requirements with customers, project GCs, and self-perform teams and ensure plan is executed at the site level - Develop EHS improvement strategies, including injury reduction, fatality prevention, and safety culture - Ensure site audits, inspections, and engagement activities align with the project EHS program - Identify project safety equipment needs and ensure availability before kickoff - Assist site teams with incident investigations and ensure corrective actions are implemented - Ensure all project personnel have the requisite safety training pertinent to their scope of work, and notify management of any non-compliant safety procedures, participating in corrective action discussions to resolve issues in a timely manner - Evaluate subcontractors and subcontractor safety programs, recommend improvements based on trend analysis, act as an advocate for Redwood by promoting company culture and policies, and present the progress of the project safety program to leadership as directed - Other duties as assigned Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities - 10+ years of construction EHS experience required, including 5+ years directly managing or supervising other EHS professionals. - Associate’s degree in construction safety management or a related field and two years of construction safety management experience, or CHST certification (or equivalent) and five years of construction safety management experience - Ability to interface with Senior Executive team at customer/client sites, representing Redwood in professional safety-forward manner. - Experience in utility-scale solar or battery energy storage construction EHS is strongly preferred - Strong knowledge of construction site equipment, methods, and processes - Ability to understand, interpret, and apply applicable regulatory requirements (Federal and State OSHA, EPA, etc.) to the project scope of work - Excellent communication skills, with the ability to interact with all levels of staff, including owners and clients - Ability to lead, influence, and coordinate own and others’ actions; strong multitasking, organization, and time-management skills - OSHA 30 certification obtained within the last 5 years - Ability to identify onsite project safety risks and recommend mitigation within safety and project program requirements - Ability to travel up to 40% of the time across multiple concurrent project sites, with occasional nights and weekends as required - Ability to take on special tasks or projects with limited direction and oversight - Demonstrated ability to manage the activities of multiple sections or a discipline through subordinate supervisors and/or professionals, including workforce planning and performance management - Experience translating functional/program-level EHS strategy into operational processes executed consistently across multiple concurrent project sites - Advanced understanding of the EHS business line, with the judgment to recommend changes to policies and procedures affecting the department or multiple disciplines - A passion for sustainability and making the world a better place This job description is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties, responsibilities, or qualifications associated with the position.
