The intern will contribute to the design of a regenerative drying and purification system to enable efficient and continuous production of high-purity hydrogen. Working closely with an R&D engineer, the intern will characterize thermal/separation processes, develop control systems, and optimize operating parameters to satisfy key reliability and cost constraints. As the directly responsible individual overseeing an experimental test station, the intern will develop a data analysis framework to provide key insights into long-term physicochemical phenomena. The role may involve working with vendors to design and develop custom components. ## Requirements - Currently pursuing or recently completed a B.S. or M.S. in Chemical / Materials / Mechanical / Environmental Engineering, Chemistry, Physics or similar - Comfortable rolling up their sleeves to work with basic mechanical/electrical components, troubleshoot independently, and motivated to take ownership (agency) of hands-on lab work - Strong fundamentals and problem-solving intuition in one or more of the following areas: thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat and mass transfer, reaction kinetics, phase equilibria - Thrives in a fast-moving environment and can learn, iterate, and execute with velocity - Must be available to start in August/September 2026 and work on-site in Mountain View, CA - Highly organized with strong attention to detail and a commitment to following through (accountability) - Clear, thoughtful communicator who works well on small, collaborative teams ## About Fourier ## Company Overview - **One-liner**: Fourier develops on-site, on-demand hydrogen production systems using modular electrolyzers inspired by data-center architecture to make clean hydrogen affordable and accessible. - **Entity Type**: Private (Series A) - **Headquarters**: Palo Alto, California, United States - **Founded**: 2022 - **Founders**: Siva Yellamraju (Co-founder, CEO), Ali-Amir Aldan (Co-founder) ## Core Business - **Primary industry**: Renewable Energy Equipment Manufacturing / Clean Hydrogen Production - **Target customers**: B2B – pharmaceutical, petrochemical, ceramics manufacturers; heavy transportation; long-term renewable energy storage; industrial feedstock users. - **Mission**: Transition the global energy landscape towards a purely sustainable and emission-free future by making on-site hydrogen universally accessible. ## Products & Services - **Fourier On-Site Hydrogen System**: A modular, fully automated electrolyzer system that produces hydrogen on demand without transportation or storage. Each module contains roughly 20 small electrolyzers called “blades,” fed by a shared water pump and powered by repurposed data-center power supplies. Software manages each blade’s performance, optimizing efficiency and degradation – similar to a battery management system. ## Market Standing - **Valuation/Market Cap**: Not disclosed (private company) - **Key Metric**: Total funding of **$18.6 million** (Series A announced April 2025; seed round in 2023) - **Notable Investors/Partners**: General Catalyst, Paramark Ventures (co-leads Series A), Airbus Ventures, Borusan Ventures, GSBackers, MCJ Collective, Positive Ventures. - **Growth Signals**: - Headcount grew **76% YoY** to 34 employees (as of mid-2025). - Two lab-scale pilots completed with a pharmaceutical manufacturer and a solar energy company. - Two commercial-scale pilot plants underway (Ohio petrochemical plant; Fremont, CA airline parts manufacturer) expected operational by June 2025. - Operates in 5 countries (US, Canada, South Korea, Switzerland, India). ## Competitive Advantages - **Data-center-inspired design**: Uses off-the-shelf, commoditized power supplies and software intelligence to push complexity into a compute layer, dramatically lowering costs. - **Cost advantage**: Claims to deliver hydrogen at **$6–7/kg** versus the market’s $13–14/kg – a ~50% savings for customers without subsidies. - **No transportation/storage**: On-site generation eliminates hazardous logistics and extreme safety measures required for hydrogen distribution. - **Modular & scalable**: System is sized like two server racks; can scale from lab to industrial throughput (targeting 6–20 kg/hour, 300 kW–1 MW capacity). ## Strategic Focus - Scale commercial pilots and move toward broader deployment. - Optimize efficiency through data-driven blade management (treating production as a data optimization problem). - Target industrial customers with high hydrogen demand (pharma, petrochemical, ceramics, aerospace). - Expand into heavy transportation and long-term renewable energy storage use cases. ## Why Work Here - **Culture**: “Engineering Audacity” – the company seeks bold engineers, innovators, and problem-solvers to tackle the world’s toughest energy challenges. - **Work environment**: On-site in Palo Alto, CA (physical office). Small, fast-moving team (~34 people) with a flat, high-impact structure. - **Leadership & team**: Co-founders with deep technical backgrounds; team includes alumni from Apple, Sila Nanotechnologies, Tesla, and other top engineering organizations. - **Growth opportunity**: Early-stage company with strong investor backing, 76% headcount growth, and active hiring across mechanical, electrical, software, and manufacturing roles. - **Active job postings**: 7 open roles as of mid-2025 (e.g., Sr. Mechanical Engineer, Engineering Program Manager, Director Electrical Engineering, Process Engineer).
