We believe the future of professional software engineering is humans managing fleets of AI agents. This won’t just be for writing code, however, but also for responding to incidents, analyzing production data, automatically fixing bugs, and reviewing code. Exponent is in a unique position to shape this future. We’ve built a platform called the Exponent Runtime that lets us tackle all software engineering tasks at once—the runtime makes it easy to build specialized agents that are state of the art at different tasks software engineers do. Most companies only focus on the task of writing code or one specialized task—at Exponent we are automating the entire software development lifecycle. Exponent is in a unique position to shape this future. If you are curious and interested in building at the bleeding edge of AI capabilities and AI developer tools, we would love to hear from you. What we’re working on: It’s happened to you before: you think you have a full day available for deep work, but you get interrupted by a bug report, then a one-off request to query some data, three pings to review big pull requests, and all of a sudden it’s mid-afternoon. At Exponent, we’re building a platform for agents that handle these tasks so that engineers can focus on their most important work. We’re building [specialized agents](https://exponent.run/teams), such as a Bugfix, SQL, and Code Review, that take tasks like the ones mentioned above entirely off your plate. Over time, as we build more agents, those agents become more capable, and our customers extend our platform to create their own agents, every engineer’s day will start and end with Exponent. Who we are: - Are taking an ambitious approach to a massive market, and each team member’s responsibilities reflect this. At Exponent, a single-engineer owned product like the Code Review Agent regularly outperforms entire companies dedicated to the same problem. - Are a team of engineers who have each been building software for over a decade, and value technical depth in a world where it’s increasingly easy to forego it. We come from a background of systems and infrastructure engineering, working on things like the Swift Compiler, distributed data orchestration software, and scaled video conferencing systems. Responsibilities: - Build and maintain the Exponent user surface area, which spans everything from the web application, CLI, and VSCode extensions - Build and own at least one of the core exponent agents, such as the Database or Code Review agent Strong candidates will have a few of the following: - Have several years of experience building performant modern web applications with React/Next.js, TypeScript, and Tailwind. Take a principled approach to component architecture, state management, and details like edge case handling - Can translate Figma designs into production code, and can push back when designs might compromise usability or performance - Are comfortable working with real-time data over sources like websockets and building interactive experiences that handle complex states - Can work with lower level systems primitives, such as building terminal CLIs interacting with shells and subprocesses in Node.js - Are excited about exploring new interaction paradigms for human-AI collaboration, understanding that it may require new UI patterns. We aggressively dogfood our own product and circulate feedback internally. We have a pair programming agent available to try at https://www.exponent.run/, and it’s a great signal for you to try it and let us know what you think. Our Process: Please fill out the short application below. If there’s a potential fit, a founder will reach out directly to set up time to meet. From there, we want to quickly and thoroughly get to know each other. We will invite you to visit us at our office for at least one day where we’ll go through your past experience and work through some problems together. ## About exponent.run ## Company Overview - **One-liner**: Exponent builds a specialized platform of AI agents that automate the entire software engineering lifecycle, from code review and incident response to SQL queries and bug fixing, allowing large engineering teams to focus on deep work. - **Entity Type**: Private (early-stage startup, seed stage not disclosed) - **Headquarters**: Menlo Park, CA, USA - **Founded**: 2024 - **Founders**: Sashank Thupukari ## Core Business - Primary industry/industries: AI-powered developer tools, software engineering automation, infrastructure for AI agents. - Target customers: Large engineering teams (B2B Enterprise) in need of automating repetitive engineering tasks and scaling their software development lifecycle. - Mission: "The future of professional software engineering is humans managing fleets of AI agents" – enabling every engineer to start and end their day with Exponent. ## Products & Services - **Exponent Runtime**: The core platform that allows building and running specialized software engineering agents. It provides fault-tolerant, low-latency infrastructure for real-time agent communication, sandboxed code execution, and deep integration with terminals, CI pipelines, and remote environments. - **SQL Agent**: Translates natural language into accurate SQL queries, understands database schemas, connects to major data stores, and iteratively refines outputs. - **Incident Response Agent**: Investigates alerts by analyzing telemetry, generating hypotheses, summarizing incidents, and following team playbooks to support on-call engineers. - **Error Autofix Agent**: Detects production exceptions, enriches them with context, and automatically reproduces, fixes, and tests issues in an isolated environment. - **Pair Programmer Agent**: Integrates with any stack for real-time collaboration – debugging, writing tests, and navigating unfamiliar code. - **Code Review Agent**: Reviews pull requests instantly, catching logic errors and performance risks while enforcing coding standards through configurable rules. ## Market Standing - **Valuation/Market Cap**: Not disclosed - **Key Metric**: Total Funding – Not publicly available (likely early-stage, bootstrapped or seed). Team size is 1–10 employees. - **Notable Investors/Partners**: No named investors publicly; collaborated with OpenAI on a feature (referenced in Hacker News post). Evil Martians is listed as a client/partner for design and engineering contributions. - **Growth Signals**: Active hiring for senior roles (Systems Engineer, likely others) as of mid-2025; expanding agent suite to cover more of the software lifecycle; recently launched with a public Show HN and received attention from the developer community. ## Competitive Advantages - **Platform approach**: Unlike most AI coding tools that focus on a single task (e.g., code generation), Exponent’s Runtime enables a fleet of specialized agents covering the entire engineering lifecycle – code review, incident response, debugging, SQL, production fixes. - **Multi-environment support**: Works across terminal, web, CI, IDE, and remote machines with consistent context and capabilities. - **Transparency and control**: Provides clear visibility into agent actions (diff views, real-time shell rendering), making it easier for developers to steer and trust the agent. - **Deep infrastructure expertise**: Founders and team have backgrounds in compilers, distributed systems, and video conferencing (Swift Compiler, scaled video conferencing), enabling them to build low-latency, fault-tolerant agent infrastructure. ## Strategic Focus - Expand the number and capability of specialized agents (e.g., add more lifecycle tasks). - Enable enterprise customers to create their own custom agents on top of the Exponent Runtime. - Build out the platform to handle large-scale fleet management for enterprise engineering teams, including on-prem deployments. - Continue to iterate on the developer experience, making agents more autonomous yet steerable. ## Why Work Here - **Mission-driven engineering**: Opportunity to define how AI agents will work alongside humans in professional software engineering – a massive, ambitious market. - **Technical depth**: The team values deep systems and infrastructure engineering; single engineers own products that outperform entire companies in the same space. - **On-site culture**: Currently based in San Francisco (Menlo Park) with an on-site, collaborative environment ideal for tackling real-time, low-latency challenges. - **Bleeding-edge work**: Build at the frontier of AI capabilities, working with modern Python stack (FastAPI, Postgres, Redis) and infrastructure like Kubernetes, terminal emulation, and unikernels. - **Autonomy and impact**: Small team (1–10) means each member has outsized ownership and responsibility; current open roles include senior Systems Engineer. ## Sources 1.
