The team built a leading position in the domestic bill-pay market and is now expanding toward a broader set of consumer financial products. The company moves hundreds of millions in annual transaction volume and operates with venture backing and a stable runway. The next twelve months bring new products, deeper payments infrastructure, and a growing surface area across web and mobile. This role offers substantial ownership over what ships to a large consumer user base. This is a senior, hands-on role. Everyone on the team writes code. The engineers who thrive here take an ambiguous problem, work it, ship it, and adapt when requirements change. You will lead on mobile projects while moving across the front end and into the back end when the work calls for it. The environment is fast-paced and rarely the same two weeks running. You will own the mobile experience for a React Native application across iOS and Android, currently live and roughly at parity with web. The work is continuous improvement, new product surfaces, and ongoing experimentation rather than a from-scratch build. You will partner closely with product, design, and the rest of engineering to turn early ideas into shipped features. Tech stack - Mobile: React Native (iOS and Android), Typescript - Front-end: React, React Native, Next.js, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS - Back-end: Node.js, NestJS, TypeScript, Firebase - Infrastructure & DevOps: Git, GCP ## Key responsibilities - Mobile application development: Ship and maintain features across the React Native app end to end, spanning architecture, code, testing, and release to the App Store and Google Play - Full-stack contribution: Contribute to front-end and back-end work as the problem demands, without being confined to a single layer - Technical leadership: Take ownership of projects, set the quality standard for surrounding engineers, and mentor others regardless of title - Problem ownership in ambiguity: Take a rough problem, determine what actually needs solving, execute, and adapt when requirements shift - Code quality & reliability: Write well-tested, maintainable code; engage in code reviews, refine development practices, and help optimize continuous integration and delivery workflows - Scalability engineering: Participate in technical design discussions to ensure that systems can handle increasing transaction volumes and growing feature complexity, all while maintaining security, performance, and reliability - Cross-functional collaboration: Work closely with product, design, and other engineering team members to translate product requirements into technical solutions; share insights, mentor less experienced engineers, and contribute to a supportive, knowledge-sharing culture - Adaptability & Innovation: Keep abreast of emerging technologies and industry trends; experiment with new tools and approaches to ensure that the team’s technology choices remain efficient, current, and well-suited to the evolving product roadmap ## Your know-how - You have 5+ years of software engineering experience - You have 3+ years of mobile development experience, ideally building React Native applications for iOS and Android - You have experience navigating app store submissions and updates for cross-platform deployment - You have experience designing, implementing and maintaining RESTful APIs - You have experience with Git version control and release management - You have experience working with large datasets and NoSQL databases - You have a track record of driving and delivering key initiatives in high autonomy, fast-paced settings - You have strong communication skills and the ability to explain complex technical ideas in accessible terms, contribute to cross-functional discussions, and thrive in a team that values mentorship, openness, and respectful discourse It’s a bonus if - You have experience with financial/payments APIs (e.g., Stripe, Flinks) and payments infrastructure - You have experience working in a startup setting and bringing applications to market from scratch (perhaps even as a former founder/founding team member) - You are proficient with CI/CD workflows and tooling - You have experience integrating mobile apps with Node.js back-end services in a full-stack environment ## About Lutra ## Company Overview - **One-liner**: Lutra is a water and wastewater process engineering consultancy and software provider, delivering smarter solutions to protect water, the environment, and people’s health. - **Entity Type**: Private - **Headquarters**: Lower Hutt, New Zealand - **Founded**: 2006 - **Founders**: Not publicly available ## Core Business - **Primary industry/industries**: Water & Wastewater Treatment, Utilities, Environmental Engineering, Data Management Software - **Target customers**: Government municipalities, industrial clients in New Zealand, and international clients in the water and wastewater sector (B2B, Enterprise) - **Mission or purpose statement**: "To protect water, the environment and people's health, by providing smarter solutions." ## Products & Services For each major offering: - **Infrastructure Data (ID)**: A market-leading, scalable, cloud-based operations and compliance management software platform.
