As we plug in more devices and services, we need new ways to connect to power. The traditional, one-size-fits-all utility approach, with complicated bills and frustrating customer service, no longer works. At Light, we make it easy to get affordable, renewable electricity by embedding power with the products that consumers already use, from the companies they love. Light's mission is to power a sustainable and abundant energy future for everyone. We do it by making any company able to sell electricity. With Light's utility-as-API platform, companies from automakers and solar providers to real estate and beyond can offer their own, integrated electricity plans. Imagine purchasing an electric vehicle that includes unlimited home charging, or solar panels that come bundled with any excess energy you might need from the grid. We're building the flexible future where clean energy shows up wherever customers already are. We're a Series A company based in Austin, TX. We've found meaningful traction and are now investing aggressively in growth. Join us in building the digital energy infrastructure for the next century of power. ## The role Light is hiring its second Product Designer. You'll own your own research-to-production design process across verticals and market expansion, working in a genuine design partnership where the quality bar raises through ongoing two-way critique. You'll research categories most designers haven't worked in, find the moments that determine whether a customer commits to an energy plan, and ship your work. This is also a role where you'll help establish design culture at Light while the company is still early enough for it to matter. What you'll do: Research new prospect audiences and existing partner programs to find where customers are most ready to act. Identify the inflection points in a customer journey that actually move someone toward a decision, and design toward those moments. As Light expands into new geographies, you'll help determine what needs to change in the product to serve both new customers and new partners. You'll own the screens you touch and contribute to a shared quality standard through active critique with our design lead. You'll also help build the research process the team operates from: how we recruit, which methods we use at which stages, and how findings inform direction. In six months, success looks like: You've identified and acted on high-value inflection points across at least two focus areas. A design team culture is forming, with a shared quality bar and a research process the team actually uses. Cross-functional teams trust your judgment. You would describe yourself as: - Someone who can drop into a category they know nothing about, figure out what actually matters to customers, and design from that insight rather than assumptions - A journey mapper who thinks in inflection points: you want to know where a customer decides to commit or walk, not just where they clicked - A designer with more than one research method who validates ideas before investing company resources on shipping - Someone who isn't satisfied by the first direction and explores a wide range of approaches before converging, with a portfolio that shows the breadth - Someone who works fluently within an established design system and raises the quality bar through partnership and critique - Comfortable being the person in the room who says "the research says otherwise" and can back it up - Someone who can establish a design game plan on their own and bring others along on the thinking - 5+ years of product design experience, or a portfolio that makes the years irrelevant - Based in Austin. This role is in a collaborative office with friendly teammates, with work-from-anywhere flexibility in July. ## About Light ## Core Business - **Primary industry**: Energy Technology (Retail Electricity Provider & Virtual Power Plant platform) - **Target customers**: B2B2C – solar providers, automakers, home platforms, and other brands that want to offer electricity plans to their own customers in deregulated energy markets. - **Mission**: “Rebuilding the power grid for a fully renewable future” and “power a sustainable and abundant energy future for everyone.” ## Products & Services - **Embedded Electricity Platform**: A full-stack platform that lets partners launch their own branded electricity plans with no-code (same-day), embeddable UI components (week-long), or a REST API (fully custom). Light acts as the licensed Retail Electricity Provider (REP) and Qualified Scheduling Entity (QSE), managing risk, compliance, payments, and customer support. - **Virtual Power Plants (VPPs)**: Aggregates distributed energy resources (batteries, EVs, smart HVAC) to capture value from time-spread trading, offering partners either a fixed revenue model or a revenue share. ## Market Standing - **Valuation/Market Cap**: Not publicly disclosed - **Key Metric**: Total funding amount not disclosed; backed by notable climate and tech investors. - **Notable Investors/Partners**: Investors include Henrik Langeland (Founder/CEO of Arcadia), Kiran Bhatraju (CEO of Copper), Sam Calisch (Founder/CEO of Enode), Jean-Denis Greze (CTO of Plaid, former), Albert Lee (COO of Affirm, former), Huey Lin (CMO of OPower, CEO of Dandelion, former), Calvin French Owen (Founder/CTO of Segment, former), Michael Sachse, Tyler Moragne, and others. Partners include 2 of the top 5 automakers and 300k+ rental units. - **Growth Signals**: 26 employees, 6.9% monthly headcount growth, 10 active job postings. Currently operating in Texas (largest retail electricity market in the US) with planned expansion to Northeast and Midwest. Claims over 30% customer enrollment rate among partner customers. ## Competitive Advantages - **Embedded platform approach**: Partners keep their brand front-and-center while Light handles all energy-specific complexity (licensing, grid scheduling, billing, compliance). - **Multiple integration paths**: From no-code to full API, enabling rapid launch and deep customization. - **VPP monetization**: Unique ability to turn customers’ devices into revenue streams without requiring partners to become energy experts. - **Licensed infrastructure**: Holds both a REP license and a QSE license in Texas, giving direct access to the ERCOT market. ## Strategic Focus - Geographic expansion: currently in Texas, planning to enter New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Illinois. - Deepening partner integrations (especially with EV and solar companies) to drive enrollment and device monetization. - Scaling the platform to handle more device types and grid services. ## Why Work Here - **Culture**: Described as ambitious yet humble, with no micromanagement or hustle culture. Team collaborates in person in downtown Austin. - **Impact**: Employees ship fast and work on “critical planet infrastructure” from day one. - **Benefits**: Covers essential health insurance plus One Medical membership; mental health and family-building resources; on-site gym; eco-commute credits; freedom to work from anywhere in July. - **Work policy**: In-person in Austin (tight feedback loops and shared context are valued). ## Sources 1.
