Whether you have had the opportunity to work on airport and airfield electrical infrastructure projects or not, our answer is the same – great! Many of the skills that make electrical engineers successful in designing airfield lighting, power, and communications systems are transferrable from various projects across the commercial, industrial, institutional, utility, and transportation sectors. In fact, most of our team members started their careers in areas outside the aviation sector before they discovered the fascinating world of airport and airfield infrastructure design. Our team includes experienced engineers, planners, and technical specialists who are passionate about sharing their expertise, mentoring teammates, and helping others grow. That said, we want to know more about your curiosity and eagerness to learn, your ability to collaborate across disciplines and geographies, and your passion to design solutions for whatever engineering challenge you are presented with. We’ll take it from there and provide the support, technical guidance, and hands-on project experience needed to build a rewarding career in this unique field within our industry. No matter where you’re coming from, we can teach you all there is to know about airfield electrical design, including airfield lighting, NAVAIDs, airport power systems, communications networks, and airfield controls. In other words, we can teach airport electrical infrastructure design all day, every day. We can’t teach curiosity. So, show us what you’ve got, and we’ll show you what else you can do! ## What You'll Do Design Critical Infrastructure - Design electrical systems supporting commercial, general aviation, and air defense facilities. - Develop designs for power distribution systems, lighting systems, control systems, emergency generators, communications systems, and airport infrastructure. - Support the design and implementation of airfield lighting systems, signage, NAVAIDs, electrical vaults, and associated control equipment. - Prepare engineering calculations, technical reports, plans, specifications, and construction cost estimates. - Utilize AutoCAD, Revit, and other engineering design tools to develop project deliverables. Collaborate and Grow - Work alongside Civil, Structural, Mechanical, Architectural, and Electrical professionals on multidisciplinary projects. - Learn directly from experienced aviation engineers and technical specialists. - Expand your understanding of FAA requirements, airport operations, aviation infrastructure systems, and electrical design applications unique to the aviation environment. - Participate in field investigations, site visits, and construction observation activities. Build Relationships - Participate in client meetings and project planning discussions. - Assist with proposal development and project pursuits. - Support deeply rooted relations with legacy client representatives and assist in cultivating new and emerging relations to advance and expand TKDA’s services within the greater aviation sector. - Develop trusted relationships with airport clients, stakeholders, contractors, and project teams. What Success Looks Like In this role, you might spend one day designing power distribution systems and backup power infrastructure for an airport facility and the next reviewing airfield lighting systems that help pilots safely navigate runways and taxiways. You'll have opportunities to: - Deepen your electrical engineering expertise. - Learn specialized aviation infrastructure systems. - Grow your project management responsibilities. - Expand your client-facing experience. - Develop into a technical leader within a growing aviation practice. Required Qualifications - Accredited bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and a minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience involving power, lighting, control, or signal system design. - Experience with electrical distribution equipment, lighting systems, transformers, panelboards, and related infrastructure combined with knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). - Experience using AutoCAD and Revit. - Experience coordinating with multidisciplinary engineering and design teams. - Valid driver's license and satisfactory driving record with an ability to travel periodically (approximately 10-15%) for project meetings, site visits, conferences, and client engagements. ## Preferred Qualifications - Professional Engineer (PE) registration; Minnesota preferred. - Experience supporting commercial, industrial, institutional, utility, transportation, or infrastructure-related projects. - Experience with medium-voltage power distribution systems. - Experience with emergency power systems, communications systems, controls, or industrial power applications. - Familiarity with FAA Advisory Circulars, Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC), or airport infrastructure projects. - Previous experience preparing project scopes, fee estimates, or technical proposals. ## About TKDA ## Company Overview - **One-liner**: TKDA is a 100% employee-owned engineering, architecture, and planning firm providing comprehensive infrastructure, industrial, and water solutions across the United States. - **Entity Type**: Private (100% employee-owned via ESOP) - **Headquarters**: Bloomington, Minnesota, United States - **Founded**: 1910 - **Founders**: Not publicly available (founded as Toltz, King, Duvall, Anderson and Associates) ## Core Business - **Primary industries**: Civil Engineering, Architecture, Planning, Industrial & Manufacturing, Transportation, Water/Wastewater, Energy, Buildings & Sites - **Target customers**: B2B – public agencies (municipalities, transportation authorities), private industrial clients, and institutional clients (education, healthcare) - **Mission statement**: “To provide sustainable design services that build upon our tradition of providing trusted solutions and creating value for our clients, communities, and employees since 1910.” [tkda.com](https://www.tkda.com/about/guiding-principles/) ## Products & Services - **Industrial & Manufacturing**: Building design, energy solutions, process engineering for ag/food, mining, manufacturing, and industrial facilities. - **Transportation**: Aviation, rail, surface transportation infrastructure planning and design. - **Buildings & Sites**: Education, civic, parks, public works, transportation facilities. - **Water**: Water treatment, wastewater, surface water management. - **Energy**: Industrial energy systems and regulatory compliance.
