LandDesign is an equal opportunity employer and values a diverse workplace. ## About LandDesign ## Company Overview - **One-liner**: LandDesign is an award‑winning integrated design firm that combines landscape architecture, civil engineering, urban design, and planning to create sustainable, buildable places for public, private, and federal clients. - **Entity Type**: Private (bootstrapped – no external funding) - **Headquarters**: Charlotte, North Carolina, United States - **Founded**: 1978 - **Founders**: Larry Best ## Core Business - **Primary industries**: Landscape Architecture, Civil Engineering, Urban Design, Land Planning, Master Planning - **Target customers**: B2B – developers, public agencies, federal clients, and large‑scale real‑estate owners (e.g., Disney, Howard Hughes Holdings, Hillwood). The firm also works with global architecture firms such as HKS, Gensler, HOK, and Populous. - **Mission / purpose**: *“Creating places that matter”* – balancing creativity with technical insight to deliver environmentally responsible, community‑shaping projects. ## Products & Services - **Landscape Architecture**: Site design, streetscapes, parks, and public spaces focused on sustainability and functionality. - **Civil Engineering**: Site development, stormwater management, grading, utility design, and embedded engineering services (e.g., long‑term contracts with Charlotte Stormwater Services). - **Urban Design**: Density, transit‑oriented development, brownfield reclamation, and large‑scale mixed‑use frameworks. - **Master Planning**: Comprehensive long‑term plans for master‑planned communities, resorts, and commercial districts (e.g., the Tysons retrofit). - **Land Planning**: Zoning, entitlement strategies, and pre‑development feasibility analysis. ## Market Standing - **Valuation**: Not disclosed (private company) - **Key Metric**: Annual revenue ~$26.4 million (LinkedIn estimate, 2025/2026). Total funding: None (bootstrapped). - **Notable Clients & Partners**: Disney, Howard Hughes Holdings, Comstock, Hillwood, Universal Entertainment; architecture firms HKS, Gensler, HOK, Populous. - **Growth Signals**: - Awarded the 2024 ASLA Landscape Architecture Firm Award. - Expanded from landscape architecture to civil engineering as a core discipline, now roughly a 50‑50 revenue split in Charlotte. - Office footprint: 9 U.S. studios (Charlotte, Orlando, Dallas, Alexandria, Denver, etc.) and a small international presence (UAE, Algeria, Germany). - Employee count reported as ~270 in 2024 (article) and ~224 in more recent LinkedIn data – indicating possible slight retraction or stabilization. ## Competitive Advantages - **Integrated engineering + design**: In‑house civil engineering paired with landscape architecture creates early clash detection and captures engineering fees – a combination relatively rare among traditional landscape firms. - **Deep public‑sector relationships**: Embedded engineers in Charlotte’s Stormwater Services Department provide a recurring, stable revenue stream. - **Long‑tenured leadership**: 60% of partners have spent their entire career at LandDesign, fostering deep institutional knowledge and a “one firm, long hallways” culture. - **Pre‑development expertise**: Front‑end financial and entitlement advisory for complex projects (transit corridors, land reclamations, resorts) gives clients a strategic edge. ## Strategic Focus - **Priorities**: Continue growing the civil engineering practice across all offices (Denver is the newest location); expand into hospitality, sports/entertainment, and large mixed‑use markets; strengthen brand recognition after a decade‑plus marketing push under President Rhett Crocker. - **Direction**: Maintain a “balanced system” where landscape and engineering workloads offset each other during market fluctuations. ## Why Work Here - **Culture**: *“Better, Always”* – a growth‑mindset that values lifelong learning, curiosity, and uncommon collaboration. Emphasis on work‑life balance, family‑first approach, and inclusivity. - **Work model**: Likely office‑based with studios across the U.S. (no explicit remote policy found; 9 physical offices). Commuter benefits for alternative transportation. - **Perks & benefits**: Competitive compensation, 401k with employer contribution, PTO + paid holidays, 8 hours volunteer PTO, parental leave, health/dental/vision/disability insurance, wellness programs, and professional growth programs. - **Engineering culture**: 100% of employees are designers (landscape architects and civil engineers).
