That means owning designs from initial concept and first-article prototypes, through development testing, design validation, and into high-volume manufacturing. You will work closely with electrical, manufacturing, and systems engineering counterparts to deliver robust, producible hardware on aggressive schedules. This is a hands-on role. You will be building and testing prototypes yourself, running experiments, and iterating quickly. If you are the type of engineer who is equally comfortable at a CAD workstation and a build bench,  this role is for you. ## BONUS POINTS Experience with battery systems, power electronics enclosures, or thermal management for high-energy-density products Background in marine, defense, automotive, or industrial equipment markets Familiarity with IP-rated enclosure design and sealing strategies Experience with liquid cooling systems design and qualification ## About Fleetzero ## Company Overview - **One-liner**: Fleetzero builds electric and hybrid propulsion systems for large ships, including modular marine battery systems and autonomy platforms, to decarbonize the maritime industry. - **Entity Type**: Private (Series A) - **Headquarters**: Houston, Texas, USA - **Founded**: 2021 - **Founders**: Steven Henderson (CEO) and Mike Carter (COO) ## Core Business - Primary industry: Maritime electrification, energy storage, and autonomous vessel technology. - Target customers: Commercial shipping operators, shipyards, and fleet owners (B2B, enterprise). - Mission or purpose: To decarbonize ocean freight by delivering safe, cost-effective battery-electric and hybrid solutions that eliminate the green premium. ## Products & Services - **[Leviathan Modular Energy Storage System](https://www.fleetzero.com/)**: Scalable marine battery system delivering up to 3.4 MWh in a compact container footprint. Designed for high energy density, safety, and rapid payback (typically <6 years). - **[Battery Barge](https://www.fleetzero.com/)**: A 55 MWh mobile charging platform that can charge multiple vessels simultaneously, expandable for larger operations. - **[Modular Hull Construction](https://www.fleetzero.com/)**: Pioneering modular shipbuilding to lower construction costs and increase output, enabled by electric propulsion. - **[Autonomy Platform](https://www.cbinsights.com/company/fleetzero)**: Integrated vessel navigation, control, and propulsion system for unmanned cargo operations, targeting underserved routes. ## Market Standing - **Valuation/Market Cap**: Not disclosed (private company). - **Key Metric**: Total Funding – $59.73M raised (Series A as of 2026). - **Notable Investors/Partners**: Maersk Growth, Breakthrough Energy, Obvious Ventures, Y Combinator (Winter 2022 batch). - **Growth Signals**: - Selected (2025) to build the world’s longest-range hybrid-electric vessel. - Series A completed in 2026 with prominent climate and maritime investors. - Launched commercial autonomy platform for shipping in 2026. - Team grew to ~40 employees (as of Y Combinator profile, likely larger now). ## Competitive Advantages - **Cost parity**: Leviathan batteries deliver double the power for half the price vs. other marine battery systems, enabling positive ROI within 2–6 years. - **End-to‑end integration**: Fleetzero’s team (US Navy veterans, mariners, engineers) provides white‑glove service from design through commissioning. - **Modularity**: Both energy storage and hull designs are modular, allowing rapid scaling and lower construction costs. - **Safety focus**: The company refuses to deploy any product they wouldn’t sail on themselves, emphasizing safety above all. ## Strategic Focus - Scaling modular battery production and modular hull construction to reduce shipbuilding costs. - Expanding autonomy platform to open new cargo routes and improve access to underserved markets. - Continuing to lower the cost of maritime electrification to make decarbonization economically viable for all vessel sizes. ## Why Work Here - **Mission‑driven**: Join a team tackling one of the hardest climate challenges – decarbonizing global shipping. The work involves high‑voltage systems, cutting‑edge battery technology, and autonomous robotics. - **Expert team**: Work alongside US Navy veterans, seafarers, and seasoned engineers in a hands‑on environment. The culture is described as demanding but rewarding: “The mission is difficult. The hours are long. The work demands skill, discipline, and resolve.” - **Location**: Based in Houston, TX. Likely on‑site due to manufacturing and testing. - **Growth trajectory**: Early employee at a well‑funded startup with major backers (Maersk, Breakthrough Energy) and clear commercial milestones already achieved. - **Notable perks**: Not explicitly listed, but the company emphasizes “white‑glove service with calloused hands” – a blend of high‑engineering and practical maritime experience. ## Sources 1.
