Considering the users also happen to be other developers, this becomes an interesting challenge to think about the Developer Experience as the User Experience. You combine sharp user insight, craft, and pragmatism to deliver experiences that are elegant, usable, and built to scale. This is a wide-reaching role, as design roles at a startup should be. One week you might be running user interviews to shape a new feature; the next, refining our design system or designing a marketing landing page. You ground your work in evidence rather than assumption, partner closely with product and engineering, and turn what you learn about users into a clear, informed UX strategy that guides where we go next. ## TEAM INTEGRATION - Reports to the VP of Product; is part of the Product team - Aligns closely with the CEO (Product) and Head of Customer Success (customer experience and business impact) - Collaborate within the Product team with the Delivery Lead and the Design Engineer - Collaborates cross-functionally with engineering, marketing, product, and customer success ## ROLE OBJECTIVES You are successful if you: - Take ownership of the complete design lifecycle, bridging the gap between initial discovery and final delivery for web and product interfaces. - Cultivate an evidence-based UX strategy that leverages user research and data to steer the product's evolution. - Oversee the growth of a unified and extensible design system that spans both our product and marketing efforts. - Convert user insights and organizational objectives into pragmatic, human-centric solutions engineered for long-term scalability. - Advocate for excellence in accessibility, responsiveness, and performance as fundamental pillars of your craft. - Provide mentorship to the team, sharing expertise in research methodologies and design principles. - Refine the visual and functional identity of WunderGraph through meticulous and high-impact design work. - Impact high-level product strategy by demonstrating how user-focused decisions drive tangible business impact. ## ROLE TASKS The role focuses on, but is not limited to: Product Design - Design and prototype user flows, interfaces, and interactions with scalability in mind. - Own design problems end to end. From initial concept through execution and iteration after launch. - Rapidly produce wireframes, prototypes, and high-fidelity designs, exploring multiple concepts and iterating quickly. - Define and evolve our design system and component library, keeping it consistent and maintainable. - Partner closely with engineers on feasibility, quality, and handoff, contributing to technical decisions (and coding where you're comfortable and it helps as a plus, not a requirement). - Introduce advanced prototyping, interaction design, and motion practices. UX Research & Strategy - Plan and conduct user research across discovery and validation via user interviews, surveys, usability testing, and competitor analysis. - Turn ambiguous product questions into decision-grade research that maps to real product and design decisions. - Synthesize findings into clear insights, personas, journey maps, and opportunity areas that the team can act on. - Build and maintain a shared insight repository so learning is reusable, searchable, and available to everyone. - Translate research into an informed, evolving UX strategy that guides the roadmap and anchors design direction in real user needs. - Advocate for the user in prioritization and roadmap discussions, and define what "better" looks like through clear UX success metrics. - Run discovery workshops and share insights so research shows up where decisions are made like in design reviews, product planning, and standups embedding user knowledge from the get-go. Web & Brand Experience - Own the design and evolution of WunderGraph's web presence. - Deliver assets that span product and marketing: landing pages, visuals, campaign graphics, and interactive components. - Shape and maintain a cohesive style guide, balancing design innovation with consistency. - Support brand storytelling with motion graphics and interactive elements. ## ROLE REQUIREMENTS - Senior-level experience in Product Design or UX/UI Design, with a strong portfolio of shipped work. - Proven experience planning and running UX research (both generative and evaluative) and turning findings into strategy. - Proficiency in Figma, prototyping tools, and Adobe Creative Suite. - Strong background in UX and interaction design, accessibility, responsive design, and usability. - Experience contributing to or leading design systems and component libraries. - Comfortable using data and research to inform and defend design decisions. - Working knowledge of front-end technologies (HTML/CSS, JavaScript a plus) enough to collaborate closely with engineers. - Excellent communication, storytelling, and collaboration skills in English. - A self-starter who is comfortable with ambiguity and can lead initiatives independently in a fast-moving startup. - Comfortable working 100% remotely in a distributed team. - Willingness to travel occasionally for team retreats and workshops. Why WunderGraph? - Work from wherever you thrive—we’re fully remote and globally distributed. If you're in Miami, come work with us in person! We also provide co-working space options worldwide if needed. - Pick your preferred work hardware - We focus on getting stuff done, and on having fun whilst doing so: work hard, play hard! - You can make a real difference and find lots of opportunities to grow together with us - Discretionary PTO: take the time you need to recharge - Competitive compensation - Depending on location, we offer healthcare benefits according to local standards - Team retreats across the globe Note: This is a full-time, fully remote position, but we're prioritising candidates from EMEA. It includes a high-performance GraphQL gateway/router, a schema registry, built-in analytics, metrics, distributed tracing, and automated policy enforcement. Claims 8x better P99 latency and higher requests-per-second than Apollo Router. - **WunderGraph Hub**: A design and governance layer launched in March 2026. It provides a collaborative canvas for teams to propose, review, and approve schema changes before they reach the registry. Enforces subgraph ownership, consumer-impact checks, and approval trails. Integrates with Cosmo and other federation routers. - **Cosmo Connect**: A bridge that maps GraphQL schema fields to backend gRPC services, allowing teams to keep existing backends and languages while the router handles the translation into a unified API. - **Cosmo Streams**: Allows connection of a federated graph to event streams (Kafka, NATS, Redis), enabling real-time subscriptions while keeping backends stateless. - **MCP Gateway**: An IDE integration (Cursor, Windsurf, VSCode) that lets developers explore schemas, propose changes, and validate configurations without leaving their editor. ## Market Standing - **Valuation/Market Cap**: Not publicly disclosed - **Key Metric (Funding)**: Total funding of **$10.5M** over two rounds: - Seed (April 2023): $3M led by Aspenwood Ventures - Series A (April 2025): $7.5M led by Karma Ventures with 3 total investors - **Notable Investors/Partners**: Aspenwood Ventures, Karma Ventures. Enterprise design partners include **eBay**, **SoundCloud**, and **On The Beach**. - **Growth Signals**: ~35 employees operating across 9 countries (US, UK, Germany, Ukraine, India, Spain, Slovakia, Sri Lanka, Italy). Launched a major new product (Hub) in March 2026. Growing sales and marketing functions. Alumni are hired by companies like Tyk, Apollo GraphQL, and Hygraph. ## Competitive Advantages - **Open-Source Core (Apache 2.0)**: No vendor lock-in, which builds trust and drives enterprise adoption. Can be deployed 100% on-prem or via a managed service. - **Performance**: Claims significant benchmark advantages over Apollo Router (8x better P99 latency). - **Full Lifecycle Coverage**: Cosmo covers routing, registry, observability, and policy enforcement; Hub covers the design and governance phase — together they manage the entire API lifecycle from proposal to production. - **Team-Centric Design**: Purpose-built for organizations where schema change volume and cross-team coordination are the bottleneck (e.g., eBay with 20+ subgraph teams). Governance is built in at the design stage, not just post-hoc. ## Strategic Focus - **Enterprise Governance**: With Hub’s launch, WunderGraph is clearly targeting the biggest pain point for large-scale federation adopters: cross-team coordination and schema change management. - **AI-Readiness**: Hub governance applies equally to AI-generated proposals and human-generated ones, positioning the platform for future AI-assisted API design workflows. - **Protocol Agnosticism**: The platform unifies GraphQL, REST, gRPC, and event streams (Kafka, etc.) into a single supergraph, reducing complexity for teams with polyglot architectures. - **Scaling the GTM**: Actively hiring for senior sales, pre-sales, and marketing roles (VP of Marketing, Founding Account Executive for EMEA, Senior Solutions Architect), signaling a push to expand enterprise sales globally. ## Why Work Here - **Fully Remote**: WunderGraph is a fully remote company with no physical office or HQ. Meaningful in-person collaboration happens through hackathons, working weeks, an annual retreat, conferences, and team gatherings. - **Global Team**: Employees are spread across 9 countries, with a strong European presence (UK, Germany, Ukraine) and hubs in India and the US. - **Engineering Culture**: The company emphasizes "Engineering Excellence" with core beliefs like "Velocity over perfection," "Ship, learn, repeat," and "Low ego, high ownership." They work on hard problems and expect high ownership. - **Open Source First**: Building in the open is central to their strategy and culture. Engineers contribute to the open-source Cosmo project. - **Perks**: Discretionary PTO, generous office/equipment stipend ("Choose your gear"), yearly learning budget for conferences and events, equity offers. - **Headcount**: ~35 people — a small, focused team where individual impact is high. - **Current Openings (4 as of this search)**: Head of Engineering, Vice President of Marketing, Founding Account Executive (EMEA), Senior Solutions (Pre-Sales) Architect. - **Salary Transparency**: Some roles list salary ranges (e.g., €120K–€140K for one role, $200K–$250K plus equity for another). ## Sources 1.
