We operate in a huge, but overlooked market in a country with the least amount of financial technology innovation in the developed world. Our first act is to become the cheapest and best provider of short-term credit to the 20 million people in Canada who live paycheck to paycheck. More than 800,000 Canadians have already signed up with Bree and we believe we are just scratching the surface. We are in an exciting place where we have product market fit, explosive growth, and a clear path to becoming one of the most important FinTechs in Canada. ## About the Role We’re looking for a Product Engineering Co-op to work on real customer-facing features across our backend and mobile apps. You’ll partner with engineers, Product, Design, and CX to understand the problem, build a scoped solution, test it carefully, and learn from the outcome after release. This is an 8-month co-op term. (January - August 2027) At Bree, co-ops are full members of the Engineering team. You’ll work on the same customer and business problems as full-time engineers, ship real production work, and take part in design discussions, code reviews, testing, and releases. We pair that responsibility with close mentorship, clear context, and projects scoped for you to make a meaningful impact from day one. ## What You'll Do - Build full-stack features with mentorship, from understanding the problem through implementation, testing, and release. - Work across TypeScript and Node.js backend services and React Native frontends, with support from the team as you learn the stack. - Use AI development tools to move faster, while validating the code and user experience before it ships. - Collaborate with Design, Product, and CX on customer-facing improvements, then help review feedback after release. ## What You'll Need - Currently enrolled in a Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related post-secondary programme, and available for the full 8-month term. - Experience building software through coursework, personal projects, internships, open source, or student teams. A GitHub profile or portfolio is welcome. - Foundational experience with JavaScript or TypeScript and interest in learning Node.js, React, React Native, or APIs. - Basic comfort with Git, debugging, and testing. Experience with AWS or serverless systems is helpful, but not required. - An interest in product thinking: you are curious about users, can explain tradeoffs, and want to understand why a feature matters. - Clear communication, humility, and a willingness to learn in a fast-moving, collaborative environment. - A thoughtful approach to using AI: speed matters, but you take ownership for reviewing, testing, and improving what you ship. ## Nice To Have - Exposure to mobile app development, React Native, or release workflows. - Exposure to logging, performance debugging, or analytics. - Interest in experiments, event tracking, or simple A/B tests to validate features. - Contributions to OSS or public write-ups about projects you’ve shipped. ## Benefits - Compensation: $50-$70/hour CAD, based on experience and interview performance - Offer Matching: We're open to matching competing offers - Perks: $250 monthly lunch stipend, $150 monthly transportation stipend to help with commuting to the office, in-office amenities - Impact: Work on real production features, with mentorship and review from experienced engineers. - Growth: Regular mentorship, feedback, and opportunities to learn from engineers across the team. - Path to Full-Time: Opportunity for new grad full-time employment offer Location: 2 Bloor St W, Unit 2602, Toronto ON, M4W 3E2 (Subway connected directly to the Yonge/Bloor subway station) Hybrid schedule. In-office days are Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday — we also throw in free lunch if you come in on Tuesdays and Fridays. - We'll be fully remote in January and most of February, move to 1 day in-office through March, then return to 3 days in-office starting April 2027. ## About Bree ## Company Overview - **One-liner**: Bree is a Canadian consumer finance platform that provides interest‑free cash advances (up to $750) along with a budgeting tool and financial wellness content to help people avoid overdraft fees. - **Entity Type**: Private (backed by Y Combinator S21; venture‑funded) - **Headquarters**: Toronto, Ontario, Canada (also offices in Vancouver, BC; United States; Philippines; Vietnam) - **Founded**: 2021 - **Founders**: Adam Kang and Alexander Li ## Core Business - **Primary industry**: Consumer finance / Fintech - **Target customers**: B2C – Canadians living paycheck‑to‑paycheck, especially those at risk of overdraft - **Mission/purpose statement**: “To help Canadians move towards financial wellness” with no interest, no mandatory fees, and a community‑supported model. ## Products & Services - **Cash Advance (Flagship)**: Interest‑free cash advances from $20 up to $750, with 0% APR.
