We convert excess inedible biomass into carbon-rich bio-oil and inject it into underground storage for permanent carbon removal. At scale, we can use bio-oil to make fossil-free iron. Our carbon removal efforts began in 2020 with initial purchases from customers like Stripe, Shopify, and Microsoft. Since then, we’ve scaled to thousands of tons of carbon removal, grown to over a hundred employees, and established three locations in San Francisco, Colorado, and Louisiana. We're expanding our team of ambitious, creative, and hands-on problem solvers. We value psychological safety, collaboration, and continuous learning. We take calculated risks and treat mistakes as opportunities to improve. If you're excited about tackling big challenges, we encourage you to explore our company values. Come help us reverse climate change. Gigatons or bust! ## About the Role Charm is seeking a Staff Industrial Project Engineer with a mechanical or civil engineering background to lead the development and integration of our production facilities. You'll help turn process and equipment concepts into complete industrial facilities that are safe, maintainable, constructible, and scalable. You'll serve as a technical owner for major facility projects, working across Process, Mechanical, Civil/Structural, Electrical, Controls, Facilities, Construction, Operations, Procurement, equipment vendors, and external engineering partners. Your work will span equipment layout, site infrastructure, utilities, constructability, contractor coordination, permitting, and field execution. We're looking for an experienced engineer who has helped build or significantly modify industrial facilities and enjoys solving problems that cross traditional engineering disciplines. You don't need to be an expert in every discipline; we're looking for someone who knows how industrial facilities come together, can identify the right questions and tradeoffs, and can drive engineering decisions from concept through construction and commissioning. ## Your Responsibilities - Lead the engineering and integration of industrial facility projects from early concepts through construction and commissioning. - Develop facility and equipment layouts considering process flow, utilities, maintenance access, safety, constructability, and future expansion. - Coordinate across engineering, construction, and operations teams to resolve technical interfaces and drive design decisions. - Manage technical scopes and engineering deliverables from consultants, EPC partners, contractors, and equipment vendors. - Review drawings, specifications, and technical documentation for quality, constructability, operability, and project requirements. - Make practical engineering tradeoffs across safety, performance, cost, schedule, reliability, and maintainability. - Resolve field engineering issues during construction and commissioning, while capturing standards and lessons learned to improve future Charm facilities. You Bring - Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Civil Engineering, or a related engineering discipline. - 8+ years of engineering experience supporting industrial facilities, manufacturing plants, energy projects, or other complex physical infrastructure. - Experience delivering industrial projects through design, construction, and/or commissioning. - Strong practical understanding of how industrial equipment, structures, utilities, and operations integrate within a facility. - Experience coordinating across engineering disciplines and resolving technical interfaces. - Demonstrated engineering judgment balancing safety, performance, cost, schedule, constructability, and maintainability. - Experience working with engineering consultants, contractors, EPC firms, or equipment vendors. - Strong communication skills with the ability to lead technical work across teams. Bonus, if you Bring - Professional Engineer (PE) license, Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification, or demonstrated path toward professional licensure; ability to obtain Colorado PE licensure is a plus. - Experience with greenfield industrial facilities, major expansions, or industrial site development. - Experience with biomass, bulk solids, chemical processing, mining, oil & gas, power generation, renewable energy, manufacturing, or similar industrial environments. - Familiarity with applicable industrial codes and standards such as OSHA, IBC, NFPA, ASCE, ACI, or AISC. - Hands-on field experience supporting construction, commissioning, startup, permitting, or plant operations. - Experience with industrial CAD, 3D modeling, or design-review tools. ## What We Offer Equity ownership through stock options 100% employee healthcare premiums covered Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage with multiple plan options Employer-funded HSA contributions for eligible HDHP plans Traditional and Roth 401(k) with a 50% match on contributions up to 6% Paid leave, including parental and medical leave PPE and workwear allowances Annual professional development stipend Employee recognition programs that celebrate impactful work and team contributions Opportunities for internal growth, career development, and transition into climate from a range of industries and backgrounds Visa Sponsorship Policy Since we are a small startup, certain accommodations for visa sponsorship may not be within our capability. At this time, Charm Industrial is only sponsoring E3 and TN visas. Our Commitment Charm Industrial is an equal opportunity employer. We hire based on skills, experience, and passion for our mission. Climate challenges require a wide range of perspectives and expertise, and we welcome applicants from all backgrounds. We’re excited to grow our team with people who bring unique strengths and help us improve as a company. ## About Charm Industrial ## Company Overview - **One-liner**: Charm Industrial removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere by converting agricultural and forest biomass into a carbon-rich liquid (bio-oil) and injecting it deep underground for permanent storage. - **Entity Type**: Private (Series B, raised $100 million) - **Headquarters**: San Francisco, California, United States - **Founded**: 2018 - **Founders**: Peter Reinhardt (CEO & Founder), and other co-founders including the Chief Scientist who had the breakthrough to sequester bio-oil in 2020. ## Core Business - Primary industry/industries: Carbon Removal, Climate Tech, Environmental Services - Target customers: Enterprise (tech companies, financial institutions, etc. looking to offset their carbon footprint) - Mission or purpose statement: "Charm is working to return the atmosphere to 280 ppm CO₂." The company uses plants to capture CO₂ from the atmosphere, converts the biomass into a stable, carbon-rich liquid, and then pumps it deep underground for permanent removal. ## Products & Services - **Carbon Removal via Bio-Oil Sequestration**: Charm's core service. The company collects cellulosic biomass (agricultural residues) after harvest, processes it through mobile fast pyrolyzers to create a stable, carbon-rich bio-oil, and then injects this bio-oil into EPA-regulated injection wells. The bio-oil sinks and solidifies in place for permanent storage. - **Biochar**: Charm's pyrolysis process also produces biochar as a co-product. - **Carbon Removal Credits**: Charm sells verified carbon removal credits to enterprises and organizations. Customers include Stripe, Shopify, JP Morgan, and Microsoft. ## Market Standing - **Valuation/Market Cap**: Not publicly disclosed. - **Key Metric**: Total Funding of $145.5 million (6 prior funding rounds). Annual Revenue of $9 million. - **Notable Investors/Partners**: General Catalyst (led Series B), Lowercarbon Capital, Prime Coalition, Valor Equity Partners, Incite Ventures. - **Growth Signals**: The company has completed over 7,200 tons of CO₂ Equivalent removal. They have built a transparent ledger and verification model for the industry. They are expanding capacity and co-benefits through enterprise purchases and long-term offtakes. ## Competitive Advantages - **Proprietary Technology**: Charm designs, builds, and operates a fleet of mobile fast pyrolyzers. This is a core differentiator, allowing them to process biomass on-site. - **Permanent Storage**: The bio-oil is injected underground where it sinks and solidifies, ensuring permanent carbon removal, unlike some other methods that are susceptible to reversal. - **Established Track Record**: The company has completed thousands of tons of carbon removal for high-profile customers like Stripe, Shopify, JP Morgan, and Microsoft. - **Transparency**: Charm leads the industry with a transparent ledger and a verification model that reduces the risk of over-crediting. ## Strategic Focus - **Scaling Capacity**: Increasing the number of pyrolyzers and injection sites to meet growing demand for carbon removal credits. - **Decarbonizing Steel**: At scale, Charm's bio-oil can be used to reduce iron ore into metallic iron, helping to decarbonize industrial emissions from steelmaking. - **Community Impact**: Charm partners with communities to create new jobs, reduce wildfire risk, improve air quality, and safely close abandoned oil wells. - **Expanding Product Lines**: Developing new markets for biochar and other co-products. ## Why Work Here - **Mission-Driven**: The company is focused on reversing climate change, offering a strong sense of purpose. - **Culture**: Employee reviews on Indeed highlight a "great team, mission & culture," "really strong leadership," and a collaborative environment. The culture is described as "hard driving" with ambitious goals, suitable for those who enjoy a fast-paced, self-motivated environment. - **Work Environment**: Charm is a startup; things change often. It's a good fit for individuals who thrive on ambiguity and solving huge problems. - **Compensation & Benefits**: Reviews indicate good compensation (3.9/5.0) and career growth (3.9/5.0). - **Remote/Hybrid Policy**: The company offers a mix of roles.
