Belltower was formed in 2019 as AngelList’s native fund administrator. Belltower provides fund administration services to the venture space. Our coverage spans syndicates, venture funds, and first-of-their-kind rolling funds. Our full-service fund management offering streamlines the complexity of running a fund by integrating financial reporting, tax, compliance, portfolio management, and other services that managers typically have to cobble together from multiple vendors. Our services, combined with AngelList’s software, enable us to launch and scale a fund efficiently, allowing fund managers to focus on what they do best: investing. Since 2019, Belltower has supported 27k+ funds representing over $25B in assets under administration, leveraging AngelList’s fund admin software to power the service layer for funds launched on the AngelList platform. ## About the Role We are seeking a Tax Lead – Full Service (Self-Advised) to join our growing tax team. This role is ideal for someone with partnership tax review experience who enjoys owning client relationships and driving work to a deadline. The Tax Lead (Self-Advised) will own tax delivery for Belltower's self-advised venture funds, where the fund's GP manages and signs for the fund and Belltower provides the tax service layer. You will own the relationship between Tax and these GPs: what we need from them, when we need it, and how their returns and K-1s get reviewed and released. You'll proactively manage missing information, client dependencies, and escalations to keep deliverables on track. Working closely with our Customer Relations Team, Legal, Engineering, and Fund Accounting, you'll make this process repeatable as the population grows. This is a senior individual contributor role. You will review complex partnership returns, coach Associates and Senior Associates, and use technology to replace manual follow-up with scalable workflows. You Will: - Own end-to-end tax delivery for a growing book of self-advised funds, from information collection through GP review and K-1 release - Review partnership returns and Schedules K-1, including allocations, state filings, and foreign reporting - Run GP outreach for return signers, partnership representatives, FBAR, and other filing inputs, with clear deadlines and escalation - Build and maintain the self-advised playbook, and hand recurring operational work to Tax Operations - Coach Associates and Senior Associates through review notes, training, and workflow management - Find where AI and automation can replace manual follow-up, and work with Engineering to ship it You Have: - 5+ years of partnership tax experience in public accounting, fund administration, or industry, ideally with venture capital or private equity funds - Experience reviewing Forms 1065 and Schedules K-1 and interpreting partnership agreements - A record of managing client or GP relationships where you had to drive outside parties to a deadline - Working knowledge of multi-state filings and foreign partner reporting (Forms 1042 and 8804/8805) - Clear written communication, especially when the message is a firm ask - An instinct to question existing processes and use AI and automation to build better ones - CPA, EA, or attorney admitted in a U.S. jurisdiction, or progress toward one Working Here If you don’t meet every requirement above, we still encourage you to apply. We value complementary strengths and operators who learn by doing. We operate out of hubs in New York City and San Francisco. For most roles on those teams, we work from the office at least two days per week (Tuesdays and either Wednesday or Thursday). Compensation: The compensation for this role consists of a competitive base salary, benefits, and equity package. The base salary for this role starts at $155,000+ annually but will vary based on a number of factors including a candidate’s professional background, experience, level, and location. Additional details about our Total Rewards package will be provided during the recruitment process. Benefits: We support your life both in and outside of work. **Explore our benefits Learn about Funders & Founders** What Guides Us: At AngelList, we are united in our purpose to accelerate innovation and build the future of private markets. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status. ## About AngelList ## Company Overview - **One-liner**: AngelList builds the financial system for private markets, providing the infrastructure where capital, creativity, and hard work come together to accelerate the rate of innovation. - **Entity Type**: Private (venture-backed; $124.1M total funding across 8 rounds) - **Headquarters**: San Francisco, California, United States (additional office in San Diego; workforce distributed across 31 countries) - **Founded**: 2010 - **Founders**: Naval Ravikant and Babak Nivi ## Core Business - **Primary industry**: Private market investment infrastructure / fintech (venture capital administration, fund management, startup investing) - **Target customers**: B2B and B2C — fund managers, venture investors, syndicate leads, startups, and accredited/retail investors seeking access to private markets - **Mission or purpose statement**: "The financial system for private markets." The company's stated goal is to solve the "ownership gap" for private companies — building the equivalent of public-market infrastructure (exchanges, custodians, transfer agents, brokers, retail distribution) for private markets, which now represent more than $28T in U.S. fund AUM. ## Products & Services - **AngelList Funds**: The administration layer for venture capital — enables fund managers to launch and operate venture funds, SPVs, and syndicates on the platform. - **USVC**: The brand behind retail access to venture investing, allowing non-institutional investors to participate in private-market deals. - **Meridian**: The wealth layer for private markets; a platform for managing private-market assets and portfolio operations. - **Nova** (coming soon): The banking and payments layer for private markets, announced as the next major product release. - **Scout Funds & SPVs**: Additional investment vehicles supported on the platform alongside venture funds. ## Market Standing - **Valuation/Market Cap**: Not disclosed (private company) - **Key Metric**: Total funding of $124.1M (8 prior rounds). Platform scale figures are conflicting across sources: LinkedIn reports **$171B in assets on platform, 25K+ funds and syndicates, and 72K active investors**, while Built In reports **$15B in assets for fund managers, 17K+ startup investments (including 287 unicorns), and 1.3K startups using founder services** — both cited below as conflicting reports. - **Notable Investors/Partners**: Not publicly available in the provided data sources. - **Growth Signals**: Acquired Nova (banking/payments layer) in July 2023; acquired Prospectify (2019) and Product Hunt (2016, for $20M); has delivered $10B in capital to startups with a stated ambition to reach $10T; active hiring across Engineering, Data, Finance, Marketing, Legal, and Customer Success teams. ## Competitive Advantages - **Network effects / de facto standard**: Positions itself as the default platform for startup investing, with 25K+ funds and syndicates and 72K active investors on platform (per LinkedIn data). - **Full-stack private-market infrastructure**: Unlike point solutions, AngelList spans fund administration (Funds), retail access (USVC), wealth management (Meridian), and soon banking/payments (Nova) — a vertically integrated stack for private markets. - **Data moat**: Years of transaction, fund, and investor data create switching costs for fund managers and investors alike. - **Founder-friendly brand equity**: Long-standing reputation in the startup ecosystem, including backing 287 unicorns (per Built In). ## Strategic Focus - **Launching Nova**: The banking and payments layer for private markets is positioned as the next major growth vector, completing the company's "financial system for private markets" vision. - **Scaling Meridian**: Building out the wealth layer to serve private-market asset management at scale. - **Expanding retail access**: Growing USVC to bring venture investing to a broader audience beyond accredited investors. - **Growing platform AUM**: Pushing from $10B in capital delivered toward the stated $10T ambition. ## Why Work Here - **Culture**: The company emphasizes high agency and ownership — described as "no ladders, only roads," where employees are expected to pave their own career paths and take on more than peers in the industry, faster, with less. - **Work mode**: Hybrid roles available in San Francisco, CA and New York City, NY (e.g., Senior Platform Engineer, Investor Services Specialist, Investment Operations Associate). - **Funder & founders program**: Employees can invest up to $100K from an AngelList fund into deals they source and earn 20% of the profits from those investments. - **Financial wellbeing**: Competitive salary, 401K, equity, FSA, and access to a finance coach. - **Healthcare**: Premium medical, dental, vision coverage, One Medical, wellness coach, FSA, Carrot fertility benefits, and generous parental leave. - **Lifestyle perks**: Unlimited PTO, unlimited book stipend, wellness reimbursement, and a remote office budget (co-working/home office). - **Office perks**: In-office meals, coffee walks, team offsites, commuter benefits, and safe rides home. - **Team size (conflicting reports)**: The careers page cites a team of 140; LinkedIn reports 321 employees (-0.7% YoY); Built In reports 518 total employees across 3 offices. ## Sources 1.
