## Product jobs: common questions

### What does a product manager do?

A product manager decides what a team builds and why, then works with engineering and design to ship it. Day to day that means talking to users, digging into data, writing specs, and making the hard tradeoff calls when everyone wants something different. A PM does not manage engineers; they set the direction and own the outcome.

### How do I become a product manager?

There is no single path. Many PMs switch in from engineering, design, consulting, or a business role after showing they can ship. The APM (associate product manager) programs at bigger companies are one direct route for new grads. What teams look for is judgment: can you decide what to build, back it with data, and get a team to deliver it.

### What is the product career path?

Most careers go APM to PM to Senior PM, owning a bigger surface at each step. Above senior the path widens rather than forks cleanly. You can go deep as a Principal or Group PM, owning the hardest bets, or into leadership as a Director, VP, and eventually Chief Product Officer. The two tracks blur more than they do in engineering.

### Which skills and tools should a PM learn?

The core skills are discovery, prioritization, writing clear specs, and the judgment to say no. Being comfortable with data matters: SQL, funnel analysis, and A/B testing let you argue with evidence instead of opinion. On tools, most teams run on Linear or Jira for roadmap, Amplitude or Mixpanel for analytics, and Figma to work with design.

### Do you need a degree to be a product manager?

Not a specific one. Plenty of strong PMs have degrees in engineering, business, or something unrelated, and some have none. Companies care about whether you can ship and reason about a product, which shows up in your track record and how you handle the interview case studies, not in your major.

### How much do product managers make?

Pay ranges widely by level, location, and company. In the US a mid-level PM commonly lands in the range shown on this page, Senior and Principal PMs go higher, and Director and VP roles at larger companies add significant equity on top of base. The salary bands here are illustrative; the open roles listed are real postings.
