Job description
About The Weather Company:
The Weather Company is the world’s leading weather provider, helping people and businesses make more informed decisions and take action in the face of weather. Together with advanced technology and AI, The Weather Company’s high-volume weather data, insights, advertising, and media solutions across the open web help people, businesses, and brands around the world prepare for and harness the power of weather in a scalable, privacy-forward way. The world’s most accurate forecaster globally, the company reaches hundreds of enterprise clients and more than 360 million monthly active users via its digital properties from The Weather Channel (weather.com) and Weather Underground (wunderground.com).
AI is part of how we work:
Human judgment, expertise, and creativity remain essential and are amplified by AI. We expect everyone in this role to use AI thoughtfully and proactively to accelerate their performance, improve the quality of their work, and explore new possibilities. We are looking for people who are curious, adaptable, and excited to help shape an AI-enabled culture that delivers better outcomes for our customers and our company.
Job brief:
You're a hands-on meteorologist who strengthens our forecasting and weather coverage on a flexible, contract basis. You'll contribute forecast analysis, write-ups, and on-camera or explanations across videos, articles and social media, enriching our users’ experience and understanding of how weather shapes their lives. You're rigorous about science and excel at making it matter to everyday people.
The impact you'll make:
- Forecast analysis – interpret model guidance and produce clear, accurate forecast discussions and outlooks
- Content contribution – write and explain weather stories for article, video, and social, in plain language with the right "why this matters"
- Severe weather support – help staff the severe weather desk during high-impact events, including some nights, weekends, and holidays on a scheduled or as-needed basis
- Consumer relevance – lead with what people actually need to know, not just what's meteorologically interesting
- Collaboration – work with editorial, video, product, and the Head of Meteorology to keep the science accurate and the storytelling sharp
- Quality – follow our forecasting methodology, verification, and QC standards, and flag issues early
What you've accomplished:
- Bachelor's degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, or a closely related field
- 5-10 years of professional experience in forecasting or meteorology for general consumers, including significant severe weather or high-impact event coverage
- Solid working knowledge of numerical weather prediction models, forecasting tools, and verification methods
- Clear, confident communication of complex weather information to non-technical audiences
- Comfort working in a fast-moving, event-driven environment, with availability outside standard hours during significant weather
- Self-directed and dependable – able to contribute quickly with minimal onboarding
- On-camera or on-air experience a plus
- Professional certification or membership (for example, AMS or NWA).
- Experience putting AI tools to work to speed up workflows a plus
