Overview: The MIT dropout building weapons by the millions

Mach Industries is what happens when a 19-year-old walks out of MIT to build missiles and a lot of famous investors decide to bet on it. Ethan Thornton founded the company in 2022 with a simple, aggressive thesis: the West cannot out-manufacture its adversaries with a handful of exquisite, multi-million-dollar systems, so it should build cheap, autonomous, expendable ones by the millions instead.

That bet is now worth $1.8 billion on paper, roughly a 4x jump in a single year, and the company has gone from a dozen people to hundreds working out of a 115,000-square-foot factory in Huntington Beach. The early hydrogen-weapon idea didn't pan out, but the pivot to unmanned aircraft and munitions clearly did.

Mach designs and manufactures unmanned aircraft, precision munitions, and high-altitude platforms for the U.S. military and its allies. The whole point is cost and volume: a vertical-takeoff strike system that flies like a cruise missile but is meant to cost under $100,000 to build at scale, so you can field a lot of them.

Unusually for a startup this young, Mach owns its own production. It runs a manufacturing network it calls Forge and, after acquiring Exquadrum in 2026, brought propulsion and energetics testing in house too. The company would rather control the supply chain than wait on one.

Who It's For: One buyer that matters: the U.S. government and its allies

This is a business-to-government company through and through. The customer is the U.S. Department of Defense, its service branches, and allied militaries, reached through programs like Army Applications Laboratory awards and Defense Innovation Unit contracts rather than a sales funnel.

The traction here is government contracts and hardware in the air, not revenue. Mach won an Army Applications Laboratory award to develop the Viper vertical-takeoff strike system and has since flight-tested it, landed a Defense Innovation Unit contract for a runway-independent maritime strike aircraft called Atlas, and signed a manufacturing deal with HevenDrones.

Outlook: Can it turn prototypes into production at scale

Mach has done the hard early part: raised huge sums, won real contracts, and put hardware in the air fast. The next act is harder and less glamorous, turning a portfolio of prototypes into weapons manufactured at the volume its whole thesis depends on.
