Overview: The financial OS France's small businesses and their accountants both live in

Pennylane made an unusual bet for a fintech: instead of picking a side, it built one platform for the small business owner and the accountant who serves them, and sold to both. That two-sided design is the whole story. Once a company's books, invoices, payments, and cash all sit in Pennylane, and the accountant works the same data from the same screen, neither side wants to leave.

Founded in Paris in 2020 by seven co-founders and led by CEO Arthur Waller, it has grown from an idea into one of France's fastest-rising fintechs. By early 2026 it reached a roughly 4.25 billion dollar valuation, crossed 115 million dollars in annual recurring revenue, and, notably for a company growing this fast, said it had turned profitable. Now it is carrying that model beyond France, starting with Germany.

What They Do: One place for the books, the invoices, the payments, and the cash

Pennylane pulls the messy pieces of running a small company's finances into a single source of truth. A business owner uses it to send quotes and invoices, collect payment by card or transfer, pay suppliers in a click, manage expenses and team cards, and watch cash flow in real time. Their accountant uses the same platform to do the bookkeeping, run the VAT and tax filings, and prepare the annual accounts.

The pitch to the owner is time back: Pennylane claims its customers cut the hours spent on finance and accounting by about a third. The pitch to the accountant is fewer email chains and no re-keying, because both sides read and write the same live data.

Problems: Killing the copy-paste between a business and its accountant

Small-business finance in France runs on scattered tools and repeated data entry: one app for invoicing, another for expenses, a spreadsheet for cash, and an accountant re-typing it all into separate accounting software. The gaps are where errors, late payments, and blind spots live. Pennylane's answer is to remove the handoffs. Bank feeds sync in through the EBICS protocol, receipts get captured by OCR, transactions reconcile against invoices, and the accountant sees it as it happens.

France's 2026 to 2027 e-invoicing mandate turned that integration into a selling point. Pennylane is a state-approved e-invoicing platform (Plateforme Agreee), so compliance, the Factur-X format, and e-reporting are built in rather than bolted on.

How it Happens

Scattered finance tools and repeated data entry between a business and its accountant
Slow, error-prone bank reconciliation and receipt handling
No real-time view of cash flow and financial health for owners
Compliance with France's mandatory e-invoicing reform
Manual dunning and late-payment chasing

Who It's For: Built for SMEs and the accounting firms that serve them

Pennylane sells to two audiences at once. On one side are French small and medium businesses, from freelancers and micro-enterprises up to larger SMEs and their finance leaders, the CFOs, DAFs, and RAFs who need real-time cash and profitability. On the other are the accounting firms whose partners and staff do the production work.

That dual base is the moat. An accountant who standardizes their client portfolio on Pennylane brings dozens of businesses with them, and a business already on Pennylane is easier for a partner firm to onboard. Both sides adopting it is what makes leaving expensive.

Products: An all-in-one platform stitched from four workflows

There is really one product, the Pennylane platform, but it does the work of several tools. Sales handles quotes, invoices, online signature, and card or transfer payment through Stripe and GoCardless. Accounting production covers receipt capture, bank reconciliation, VAT, fixed assets, tax returns, and annual accounts. Analysis gives owners live dashboards for treasury and financial health. Spend management adds company accounts, team cards, purchase-request approvals, and expense reports, all posted straight to the books.

Sitting across all of it is the approved e-invoicing engine, included in every plan, plus an open API and a wide integration layer for the tools businesses already use.

Sales & Invoicing
Quotes, invoices, credit notes, purchase and delivery orders, online quote signature, recurring billing, and card or transfer payment via Stripe and GoCardless, with automated dunning.
Accounting Production
Receipt capture with OCR, bank reconciliation over EBICS, VAT management, fixed assets and loans, tax returns, and annual accounts, built for accounting firms to run client portfolios.
Financial Analysis
Real-time dashboards for treasury KPIs, financial health, analytical categorization, budget tracking, and cash-flow forecasting.
Spend Management
Company account with team cards and permission controls, purchase-request approval workflows, one-click supplier payments, and expense reports posted natively to the books.
E-invoicing (Approved Platform)
State-approved e-invoicing platform (Plateforme Agreee) generating Factur-X, transmitting via the mandated network, and handling e-reporting, included in every plan.

Business Model: Tiered SaaS billed to both the firm and the client, with free e-invoicing as the hook

Pennylane runs on software subscriptions, and its clever twist is billing both sides of the relationship: accounting firms pay for the production tool, firms re-bill client subscriptions, larger SMEs subscribe directly, and financial services layer on top. That balance is deliberate. In its charter to accountants, Pennylane commits to freezing the price of the production tool on the firm side and sharing revenue back through discounts.

Published plans for businesses start at 7 euros a month and scale up by feature depth, with a free permanent tier for micro-enterprises and a 15-day trial, no commitment. Compliant e-invoicing is included in every plan, including the free one, which is a sharp wedge into a market that legally has to adopt it.

Pennylane sells tiered monthly subscriptions for businesses, priced by feature depth and activity volume, plus a free permanent tier for micro-enterprises. Plans are commitment-free with a 15-day trial, and there is no minimum contract term. Compliant e-invoicing (Factur-X emission and reception, e-reporting) is included in every plan, including the free one. Accounting firms are billed separately for the production tool, whose price Pennylane pledges to keep frozen.

Competition: A French-built challenger squeezing legacy accounting software and single-purpose fintechs

Pennylane sits between two kinds of rival. On one side are the incumbent accounting and ERP vendors like Cegid that firms have used for decades. On the other are the single-workflow fintechs, cash-flow tools like Agicap, expense apps, and invoicing point solutions, plus international bookkeeping software such as QuickBooks and Xero that some users still reach for on pure accounting depth.

Its edge is the combination itself: one platform for both the business and the accountant, native to French rules and now the e-invoicing mandate, built by a French company that has publicly promised firms it won't sell them out or move into offering accounting services itself.

Their edge

Two-sided platform, not a point tool
One workspace for the business and its accountant, versus single-workflow fintechs or accounting-only software, which raises switching costs on both sides.
Built for French rules and e-invoicing
A state-approved e-invoicing platform with Factur-X and e-reporting built in, positioning it as the default answer to the 2026 to 2027 mandate.
French-owned and founder-controlled
Founders keep majority voting control and publicly pledge no forced sale and no move into offering accounting services, addressing firms' fear of being disintermediated.

Where they're betting

  • European expansion, starting with Germany then Poland, Spain, and Belgium
  • Deepening the financial OS with value-added financial services
  • Investing in generative AI for bookkeeping and financial insights
  • Owning the French e-invoicing transition

Proof: The numbers Pennylane puts on the table

The traction is real and recent. Pennylane says more than 350,000 SMEs and 4,500 accounting firms use it, its careers page frames those as the count as of five years in, and by early 2026 it reported over 800,000 businesses and 6,000 firms on the platform. It crossed 115 million dollars in annual recurring revenue and said it had reached profitability.

Named customers on its own site skew toward recognizable French brands like Yuka, Fleet, and Nouvelle Garde. Treat the logos as the company's own selection, but the scale behind them, and a 4.6 out of 5 Glassdoor rating it cites, are the kind of numbers a marketing team can't fully invent.

What People Say: Loved for the shared workspace, dinged on support and pure accounting depth

Across third-party review sites the recurring praise is consistent: the interface is easy, the shared workspace between business and accountant genuinely cuts out email and file shuffling, and integrations with Stripe and PayPal make transaction matching painless. Users describe it as the tool that finally puts them and their accountant on the same page.

The complaints are just as consistent. Onboarding and bank connection can be slow, support is hard to reach when you need it, and buyers coming from dedicated accounting software like QuickBooks or Xero find the bookkeeping depth thinner. And because it is built around French rules, its fit outside France is still a question the company is only now answering.

Widely praised as the tool that finally puts a business and its accountant on the same live data, with recurring gripes about slow onboarding, hard-to-reach support, and French-centric depth.

Pennylane is becoming the key financial management platform for SMEs in Europe.

Funding: 204 million more, a 4.25 billion valuation, and a rare profit to back it up

Pennylane closed a roughly 204 million dollar Series E in early 2026, led by TCV with Blackstone Growth and existing backers Sequoia, DST Global, CapitalG, and Meritech Capital. The round set the valuation near 4.25 billion dollars, close to double the roughly 2 billion it carried after an 82 million dollar raise in April 2025.

What makes the number less frothy than most is what sits under it: more than 115 million dollars in recurring revenue and a company that says it is already profitable. Total funding across its rounds runs north of 460 million dollars, with Sequoia backing the company early, the same fund that got into Stripe and Airbnb in 2009.

Outlook: Can a very French product become a European one?

Pennylane has the enviable version of a hard question. It has proven the model at home, growing fast, turning a profit, and locking in both businesses and their accountants, with France's e-invoicing mandate acting as a tailwind. The open question is whether a platform this tightly built around French accounting rules can travel.

Germany is the first real test, and the company is spending its fresh capital to answer it. If the two-sided playbook ports across borders the way it worked in France, the 4.25 billion valuation looks like a floor. If accounting turns out to be too local, that is exactly the wall it has to climb.

Team & Culture: Remote-first from day one, in English, on a Rails codebase shipping 80 times a day

Pennylane was remote-first before it was cool, and not by accident: two of its tech co-founders live in different French regions, so the processes were built for distributed work from the start. The team has grown past 1,000 people across more than 30 nationalities, works in English even though the product is French, and rates the place 4.6 out of 5 on Glassdoor.

Engineering is a real draw here. The company pitches great mentors, a steep learning curve, and a culture of trust and autonomy, and the security team's own postings reveal a codebase shipping roughly 80 releases a day. Pennylane also publishes a gender-equality index and a concrete action plan, a sign it treats culture as something to measure, not just claim.

Values
Remote-first from day one, designed around distributed work, English as the working language across a 34-nationality team, Trust, autonomy, and benevolence as stated values, Steep learning curve with strong tech mentorship, Measured commitment to gender equality (published index + action plan)

Compensation: Competitive base plus equity, wrapped in a strong French benefits package

Pennylane doesn't publish salary bands, but its job postings are unusually clear about the package around the base pay. Every role advertises a competitive compensation package plus company shares, so employees hold equity in the business they are building. Comp is also tied to a stated equal-pay policy and market benchmarking across teams.

The French benefits are generous and specific: 25 paid vacation days for everyone regardless of location, and for France-based staff, 6 to 12 RTT days, 5 weeks of PTO, Swile lunch credits, and Alan Blue health cover. On top of that sit a home-office budget, a coworking allowance, Gymlib wellness access, and the latest Apple gear.

In the News: A Series E, a German launch, and a valuation that keeps climbing

The headline of the last year is momentum. Pennylane's early-2026 Series E at a 4.25 billion dollar valuation drew coverage from Sifted, SiliconANGLE, and Bloomberg, most of it noting how fast the number doubled and how rare it is for a company raising this much to also be profitable.

The other big move is geographic. In late 2025 Pennylane opened its first office outside France, in Germany, with plans for around 100 hires and Munich and Berlin bases, and named Poland, Spain, and Belgium as possible next markets. It also acquired HeyBilly in October 2024 to widen the platform.
