Job description

Overview

We’re seeking a Product Engineer to join our NYC-based team (we are an in-person company) to build the glue between OP-1 and our customers’ systems. You are a full-stack engineer who will build all of the systems around the robot: the customer UX for working with Ultra, internal ops and support tooling, or whatever the next highest priority is. You'll own features end-to-end (and might touch robot code in the process).

Who You Are

  • You have 5+ years of professional software development experience
  • You consider yourself a software generalist and have worked on a variety of software systems, with a soft spot for Python/TypeScript-based web stacks.
  • You turn high-level, open-ended problem statements into quality technical solutions (and can handle all of the in-between steps)
  • You’re dangerous with LLMs because you know when they're wrong
  • You know how to deploy high-quality production code as a part of a software team and are comfortable moving uncomfortably fast

What You’ll Do

  • Design and build customer-facing product for running and managing robots in their warehouses, and iterate from how they’re actually used on the warehouse floor
  • Build the internal tools for ops, support, and deployment so we can scale without heroics
  • Pinch-hit across the stack as needed (Android VR dev, on the robot, future mobile app)

Bonus Points

  • You're a former startup founder
  • You’ve built self-improving, agentic systems in the past
  • You have a strong product sense and know all about UX in HIL systems

Why work at Ultra

  • Early‑stage impact: Join a YC‑backed startup founded by three‑time entrepreneurs (previously founded Layer By Layer, Voodoo Manufacturing) with a decade of collaboration.
  • Fast‑paced, hands‑on culture: Engineers and researchers directly own firmware, hardware, ML models, and deployment – from design to field support.
  • Real‑world robotics: Work on robots that are already generating revenue in customer warehouses, not just lab prototypes.
  • Growth trajectory: 333% headcount growth in the past year, with ambitious plans to scale from 19 to hundreds of employees.
  • Location & flexibility: Based in New York City; roles span HQ (assembly, testing, R&D) and field deployment across the US.
  • Open roles (as of early 2026): Robotics Firmware Engineer, Robotics Hardware Engineer, Data Operations Lead, Research Scientist, Product Engineer, Deployment Engineer, Head of People – offering broad ownership and career growth.
