piq-energy· United States·
Role details
Job description
Mission
Piq Energy is helping leading developers connect to the grid faster by automating the technical power system analysis required to safely develop and deploy new assets. We’re looking for incredible people to join our team! This is a critical early hire with a significant amount of responsibility and corresponding competitive salary and equity compensation. Expect a base of $150k-$250k (location-adjusted) plus equity compensation.
Role
The bottleneck for connecting new generation and load to the grid isn't money and isn't grid capacity. It's engineering studies.
Piq Energy is building the autonomous grid planning platform to solve this bottleneck. Our platform enables our AI agents to interact with deterministic workflows in order to perform power systems analysis faster and more reliably than could ever be done before. We’re seeking an innovative software engineer to take our production agents further. You will develop, deploy, and maintain our agents and the backend services and infrastructure they run on. As part of our dynamic startup environment, you will have opportunities to own features and shape our user experience and technical architecture. You'll collaborate within our team of software engineers, power systems experts, data scientists, and designers to deliver a powerful and performant software platform.
Piq’s technical stack includes:
Backend: Python, FastAPI, Pydantic AI, Langfuse, Postgres, Temporal, AWS Frontend: Typescript, Svelte, GraphQL, Mapbox, D3.js
There’s no need to be an expert in all parts of our stack - it’s more important that you’re good at learning quickly.
Piq is a remote-friendly company, with hubs in San Francisco, CA, and Athens, Greece. Our SF team works in-person in our coworking space 2-3 days per week. We value time together and meet across the team for on-sites 2-3 times per year.
Our interview process consists of a phone screen, two technical interviews, and a call with our founders.
Responsibilities
Engineer the skills and tools our agents use and how these capabilities compose with the rest of the platform Extend the evaluation systems that grade agent output, working with our power systems engineers to turn their judgment into test sets, automated grading, and regression checks Build the memory and context management approaches that allow agents to retrieve the right information, work effectively on long tasks, and become personalized to user and organization preferences Lead workstreams end-to-end, including gathering product requirements, proposing solution architectures, developing an implementation plan, managing technical dependencies, and coordinating rollout plans Collaborate directly with users and customer-facing teammates to gather feedback and understand their needs, translating insights into design solutions Uphold the technical bar as you build, ensuring our platform is performant, scalable, and secure Provide hands-on mentorship and feedback for teammates Write clean, maintainable code following best practices Participate in and lead design discussions, code reviews, and technical planning meetings Contribute to improving software engineering practices, with a bias toward action, ensuring fast iterations and delivery of impactful solutions
Requirements
6+ years of software engineering industry experience delivering high-quality software (3+ years of experience if joining our team hybrid in San Francisco) Production experience shipping AI agents, including multi-step tool use, context engineering, and evals Current hands-on practice in a field that looks nothing like it did eighteen months ago, with recent work you can walk us through in detail Experience building scalable software starting from user needs Deep experience building data-intensive backend systems in Python, plus willingness to work across the stack as needed
Experience owning successful software delivery end-to-end
Comfort with AI coding tools like Cursor and Claude Code Strong communication and collaboration skills, with a bias towards action Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, remote-friendly environment Experience delivering for enterprise customers is a strong plus
