The Role:

As a Software Engineer in the Platform Services team, you will be responsible for maintaining and improving core architecture for applications developed in the company. Feature teams implement new ideas and improve existing ones based on the vision of the Product Team and feedback from our customers. Platform Services has high visibility and importance within the company as it’s job is to provide common foundations for those teams to build on, merge and deployment strategy, monitoring, and give technological guidance to developers throughout the company.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build and operate backend services for authentication, authorisation and account management.
  • Model multi-tenant account structures — organisations, teams, membership and roles — and keep the model correct as the product grows.
  • Design and evolve public and internal APIs, including versioning and backward compatibility.
  • Integrate enterprise identity: single sign-on over SAML and OIDC, and provisioning over SCIM.
  • Build event-driven integrations over Kafka, including schema design and compatibility.
  • Keep services available and fast on the request path, across several regions.
  • Own what you build in production: metrics, tracing, alerting, and on-call for your own services.

Requirements

Languages and frameworks:

  • Python 3.12+ — Expert
  • Go 1.23+ — Intermediate
  • FastAPI — Advanced
  • Django and Django REST Framework — Advanced

Datastores:

  • MongoDB — Intermediate — document modelling, indexing, schema migrations, and the trade-offs of denormalisation
  • MySQL — Intermediate — schema migrations, transactions, reasoning about query cost
  • Redis — basics
  • LDAP / directory services — basics

Messaging and API contracts:

  • Kafka — basics— consumer groups, partitioning and ordering, idempotent consumption, retries and dead-letter handling
  • REST and OpenAPI — Intermediate

Identity and access:

  • Multi-tenancy modelling — Advanced — organisations, teams, membership and roles; the difference between a hierarchy and a relation, and the consequences of each
  • Token-based authentication, JWT — Advanced — issuing, validating, claims design, expiry and revocation
  • OIDC — Advanced
  • SAML — Advanced
  • Session management — Advanced — where a session lives, how it is inspected and revoked
  • Role-based and attribute-based access control — Advanced
  • SCIM provisioning — Familiarity

Infrastructure and delivery:

  • Docker — Intermediate
  • Kubernetes — Advanced — deploying, inspecting and debugging a service
  • Helm — Intermediate
  • CI/CD pipelines (GitLab CI or equivalent) — Intermediate

Observability:

  • OpenTelemetry and distributed tracing — Advanced
  • Prometheus and PromQL — Advanced — diagnosing from metrics, not only reading dashboards
  • Grafana — Advanced
  • Log querying at scale — Advanced
