Role Description
Form Energy is hiring a Staff Characterization Chemist to own and develop advanced characterization methods to tackle emerging questions about our product.This role reports into our characterization team. As part of our characterization team, you will work closely with our engineering teams to identify big open questions; explore how characterization can address these questions; and develop, validate, and maintain characterization methods. You will also work closely with technicians on our team to ensure that characterization requests are tracked and processed quickly and with exceptional data quality. What you'll do:
- Collaborate with teams across the company to identify big questions, and develop & apply characterization to answer them
- Own and maintain characterization services for our colleagues related to wet chemistry, elemental identification such as ICP-OES or MS, and spectroscopy
- Work closely with one or more technicians, and enable them to perform daily measurements by managing incoming tasks, working with vendors to maintain instruments, and providing analysis to guide how the data is interpreted
- Act as a technical leader across characterization and as ambassador to other teams
What you'll bring:
- Bachelor's degree and a significant number of years of related work experience (ex. 7-10); a Master’s degree and multiple years of work experience; or a PhD with some work experience
- Expertise in the majority of: ICP-OES and/or MS, titration and related wet chemistry techniques, thermomechanical techniques like TGA/DSC, and vibrational spectroscopy
- Demonstrated ability to define and solve complex problems that may not have significant background data available
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across teams, and work in a service-based team
- Preferred: demonstrated ability to manage technicians’ workflows with both high standards and high empathy
