Job description

Technician (Motor Production)

About Motr Technologies

Robots are about to be everywhere, and every one of them is built on the same foundation: copper, steel, and magnets turned into motors. Today, most robot builders have to scour a broken supply chain for off-the-shelf motors, then design their robot around whatever they can find. Motr is flipping that around.

Motr builds low-speed, high-torque motors for robots, optimized for the work robots actually do, like holding a load at zero RPM. Using quick-change tooling on a common set of production equipment, we can make motors in many sizes and configurations, so customers get the right motor for their application instead of designing around the motor they can get. Our founder built the motors for the 1X NEO humanoid robot, and Motr is his latest and best motor design, built for a growing push to bring robotics supply chains back to the West.

We are a very early-stage team. You will work directly with the founder, learn the product from the ground up, and have a real hand in shaping how we build it.

The Role

This is a hands-on, build-the-product job. You will make motors with your hands, learn every step of the process, and help us turn what’s in the founder’s head into repeatable, documented procedures. We believe that if you know how to build the product, you will be much better at designing it, so everyone starts on the shop floor.

We plan to start with one or two technicians shadowing the founder in the near term, then grow the team as we move into our new 4,100 sq ft production facility and customer demand ramps up.

What You’ll Do

  • Build motors by hand: pull finished coils off the winding machine, place them onto steel stators, and install PCBs
  • Perform hand soldering and epoxy overmolding
  • Run and tend coil-winding machines and other production equipment
  • Follow written standard operating procedures (SOPs) precisely, and help improve and document them as you find gaps
  • Help set up the new facility: assembling workstations, installing and commissioning new equipment
  • Support the founder with day-to-day production tasks so we can ship motors to customers

What We’re Looking For

Required

  • Hands-on experience with 3D printers and basic hand tools
  • Working knowledge of a CAD program (Onshape or SolidWorks)
  • You have built something you’re proud of, and you’re excited to tell us about it
  • Strong attention to detail and the focus to carry out repetitive, precise assembly work
  • Ability to follow written instructions carefully and consistently
  • Comfortable working with your hands in a shop environment Strong signals (any of these)
  • Experience with Formula SAE, FIRST Robotics, or a similar competitive engineering or build team
  • Leadership of a project or program at school
  • Experience working on cars or other mechanical or electrical projects
  • Internship or work experience at a small company, where you wore many hats
  • Background in mechanical or electrical engineering, or similar coursework, or equivalent hands-on experience You might be a great fit if you
  • Are a recent graduate (or soon to graduate) hungry for hands-on experience
  • Are curious about how everything works, a generalist who wants to learn the whole process
  • Value following a proven process now, with room to suggest improvements as we grow
  • Want to be part of an early team and don’t mind a startup environment that can be fast-moving and a bit chaotic

Compensation & Growth

  • $20/hour to start, with the opportunity for a raise as you prove yourself
  • A clear growth path: we will pull our strongest technicians into full-time engineering roles as the company grows, including CAD and design work. After you’ve shown success on the shop floor, you’ll start taking on small design projects to improve how we build
  • Direct mentorship from a founder with deep motor-design and manufacturing experience
  • A chance to get in early at a company working on a critical part of the robotics supply chain

How to Apply

Send us your resume and, more importantly, tell us about something you’ve built: a car, a robot, a competition entry, a personal project. We want to hear what you made, how you made it, and what you’d do differently next time.

Motr Technologies is an equal opportunity employer. We welcome applicants of all backgrounds and make employment decisions without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, or any other protected characteristic.
