Job description

About us

You'll be joining a small, highly collaborative engineering team at Hybrid Financial, a distribution and outreach firm that works with public companies and asset managers. We build full-stack applications, including the internal execution platforms our agents rely on every day to do their work in financial services. Engineers here work closely with each other and with the people who use what we build, so you'll see how your work affects the business directly. We're a close team with a very long tenure. We work in person, we talk to each other a lot and we genuinely like working together. We take chances on people and invest in helping them grow.

About the role

We’re looking for a talented Junior Database Administrator to join our team and work alongside our senior DBA. You’ll help write and optimize SQL queries, monitor database performance, and support the day-to-day work that keeps our databases secure and reliable, including backups, restores, and access management. This role is perfect for someone with strong SQL fundamentals who wants to deepen their database expertise in a hands-on environment. You’ll receive mentorship from an experienced DBA, work closely with our engineering team, and have opportunities to take on more ownership as you grow.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Database Administration & Performance

  • Write, review, and optimize SQL queries and stored procedures for performance and scalability
  • Monitor database performance and troubleshoot slow queries and other issues
  • Design and maintain database schemas and indexes
  • Support backups, restores, security, and access management
  • Implement best practices for data integrity and reliability
  • Provide day-to-day database coverage when our senior DBA is away

Collaboration & Development

  • Work closely with developers on how our applications use the database
  • Contribute to technical discussions and decisions with the team
  • Document database structures, processes, and changes clearly

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ideally 2 - 5 yrs of hands-on database experience. Strong recent grads with real experience will be considered.
  • Strong SQL knowledge, including complex queries, indexing, and query optimization
  • Experience with MySQL
  • Understanding of DBA fundamentals, including backups, recovery, security, and performance monitoring
  • Experience with relational database design principles
  • Ability to talk through problems and explain your thinking clearly

NICE TO HAVE

  • Experience in finance or financial services
  • Some application coding experience, ideally C# or .NET
  • Exposure to cloud platforms, ideally Azure
  • Experience with replication, high availability, or disaster recovery setups
  • Scripting for automation (PowerShell, Python, or Bash)

What we offer

  • Competitive compensation and benefits
  • Mentorship from experienced senior developers
  • Opportunities to lead projects and grow into mid-level roles
  • Inclusive, supportive team environment

Why work at Forum Ventures

  • Culture: A team of “doers and connectors” that operates like a startup – fail fast, iterate quickly, and embrace ambiguity. The firm is built by founders for founders, so the environment is entrepreneurial and supportive.
  • Remote/Hybrid/Office: Not explicitly stated, but roles are likely hybrid or in-office given the hands-on studio and accelerator model. The team is distributed across New York, San Francisco, and Toronto.
  • Notable perks: Opportunities to work directly with early-stage founders, participate in venture building, and be part of a small but mighty team that has outsized impact. The firm emphasizes diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Open roles: Current openings include positions on the Forum team, studio founder opportunities, and portfolio company roles (see careers page).
