Product Designer at Sustainment (Austin, TX)
Sustainment· Austin, TX·
Job description
Company Overview: Sustainment is an AI-native software platform that helps US-based manufacturers easily find and work with the critical suppliers they need to build and manage their supply chains. Our vision is to reimagine American manufacturing as a hyperconnected, secure, and resilient ecosystem of local and regional suppliers who can more easily connect, interact, and do business with the industry and government customers that rely on them. We are a dual-use technology platform that supports both DoD and commercial customers in pursuit of our vision.
The Role
We are hiring a Product Designer (or Senior Designer) to continue to progress the overall user experience of the Sustainment platform, which provides Supplier Relationship Management, Supply Chain workflows, and Supplier Intelligence to some of the world’s most innovative manufacturers. Our team works at the forefront of AI-driven design with human creativity and design expertise setting the standard. You will report to the VP of Product and work as an equal partner with product and engineering.
We are also open to hiring at the Senior Product Designer level. If you have more experience, see the Senior Product Designer section below for the added scope and qualifications. Everyone applies to this one posting, and we will set the level based on your experience and interviews.
What You Will Own
- Delivery of user experience and visual design across all Sustainment products
- Consistent development and use of our AI-driven prototyping and design system and shared patterns across the areas you work on.
What You Will Do
- Work with product management and engineering to deliver exceptional design based on the functional needs of the user
- Plan and run user research with manufacturers and suppliers: interviews, rapid prototype tests, and clear synthesis of what you learned.
- Produce clear UX artifacts, from journey maps and interaction models to high-fidelity UI built on our design system.
- Use AI model-driven design tools, such as Claude, to generate UI and working prototypes from our design system, test ideas fast, and put concepts in front of users early.
- Design data-dense procurement screens and AI-assisted decision flows that keep users in control and keep trust high.
- Write design specs that cover edge cases, and stay involved through QA and launch.
- Present your designs and rationale to the team, and give and receive critique.
What You Bring
- 3+ years of product design experience, ideally on B2B SaaS products.
- A portfolio that shows shipped work and how you moved from problem to solution.
- Experience designing complex, data-dense interfaces for business users.
- Hands-on experience with AI model-driven design and prototyping, using tools such as Claude to turn a design system into working UI.
- Comfort with ambiguity, and the ability to take a rough problem to a shipped design.
- Strong collaboration and communication skills with engineers and product partners, and the ability to explain your decisions with clear rationale.
- Craft across interaction design and visual design, held to a consistently high bar.
Nice to Have
- Experience at an early-stage company.
- Background in procurement, supply chain, manufacturing, or operations software.
Senior Product Designer
At the senior level, everything above applies, plus the following.
Additional Responsibilities
- Own end-to-end design coherence across the platform, so the product feels like one system and not a set of features.
- Own the information architecture and reusable patterns that connect the core workflows.
- Set the long-term design vision for how buyers and suppliers use the platform, including AI-assisted decision making, and get it reflected in the roadmap.
- Set the research agenda and run a steady research cadence that shapes product priorities.
- Present designs and rationale to company leadership.
- Strengthen the design system so AI models can build from it reliably, build a strong critique culture and research habits, and mentor other designers as the team grows.
Additional Qualifications
- 5+ years of product design on B2B SaaS products, with clear ownership of major workflows or product areas.
- A portfolio that shows end-to-end workflow thinking, product leadership, and measurable shipped outcomes.
- Strength in system design: information architecture and reusable patterns that hold up across a whole product.
- A record of leading work from rough problem framing to shipped product, and of persuading leadership and influencing the roadmap.
- Experience mentoring designers or raising the design practice on a team.
