Job description
Sales Manager - SMB - US New York
Wordsmith Wordsmith is building the legal operations platform for in-house teams, and we are growing fast. We believe in-house legal is becoming one of the most important functions in the AI era. Every business is moving faster, but legal work is still too often scattered across inboxes, chats, documents, and disconnected systems. Wordsmith brings that work into one system. Requests come in from across the business, AI agents handle the routine, lawyers stay in control where judgment matters, and every step is captured as work happens. We are built for in-house legal, not law firms. Our goal is to help legal teams move faster, reduce unnecessary external counsel spend, and become a function the business can run with. More than 500 companies, including Financial Times, Safelite, Trip.com, Canva, Starling, and Sage, use Wordsmith. Backed by $100M from Index Ventures, General Catalyst, Highland Europe, and others, we are building one of the defining companies in legal AI.
The Role
We're hiring a Sales Manager to lead and scale our SMB NYC team. You'll own the number for your team, coach a group of full-cycle Account Executives who run high-velocity sales across smaller and mid-sized legal teams, and build the processes that keep a high volume of deals moving. Your focus will be hiring, developing people, and driving consistent team performance across short, fast-moving sales cycles. This is a fast-paced environment. Things move quickly, priorities shift, and there isn't always a clear playbook. You'll need to make decisions, set the standard, and keep your team focused and moving.
What you'll do
- Lead, coach, and develop a team of SMB Account Executives
- Own and consistently hit team revenue and activity targets
- Coach the team to qualify quickly and focus on the deals that matter
- Raise the bar on efficient discovery and demos with a clear focus on value
- Help the team close deals in shorter sales cycles (typically 2 to 6 weeks)
- Hire, onboard, and ramp new Account Executives, including SDRs stepping up
- Run tight pipeline reviews and keep follow-up strong across the team
- Work closely with SDRs, Marketing, and Product to sharpen messaging and improve conversion
- Make CRM the team's operating system for managing volume effectively
What we're looking for
- Experience managing and coaching a high-velocity SaaS sales team
- Evidence of hitting targets in a fast-paced, high-volume environment
- Strong qualification skills, and able to teach the team when to push and when to walk away
- Clear, confident communicator
- Highly organised and disciplined with pipeline management
- High energy and resilience; you can drive volume without losing quality
How we work
We're an in-office team. We work together because it helps us move faster, learn quickly, and improve as a group. You should expect to be in the office as your default. This is a fast-paced environment. Your team will be managing multiple deals at once, and momentum matters. The people who do well here stay organised, keep control of pipeline, and don't let deals stall.
What you can expect
- Equity: Stock options with real upside
- Market: Strong demand and fast-moving buyers
- Team: A growing group of SMB Account Executives to lead and develop
- Support: SDR, Marketing, and Product working closely with Sales
- Progression: Clear path to senior Sales Leadership as we scale
Why Wordsmith
We’re in a period of strong momentum — growing quickly, winning new customers, and expanding into larger accounts. The product is landing well, the market is ready, and the team is scaling to meet demand. If you want to be in the room, close meaningful deals, and grow quickly in a high bar environment, this is one of the best places to do it.
Why work at Wordsmith AI
- Culture & Philosophy: Described as a team of “lawyers and engineers blending two worlds.” Core operating principles include: “fewer, better people” (small, elite teams), relentless focus on simplicity, and building products that are so elegant they “feel like magic.” The company explicitly values judgment as the key differentiator in an AI-powered world.
- Growth Trajectory: A rare stage — Series B with $100M in funding, a small enough team that individual contributions matter every day, and early enough to shape how the company builds. Significant US expansion ahead.
- Work Environment: Hybrid (roles listed for Edinburgh and London). The hiring process is transparent and values speed: a 30-min screening call, a 45-min technical interview, a short take-home challenge (a couple of hours), and a culture interview.
- Funding Backing: Backed by the same investors who backed Figma, Stripe, and Canva — strong signal of ambition and long-term thinking.
- Impact: Working on a problem that is “genuinely new” — building the platform to run in-house legal teams, which is a category that did not exist before AI made it possible.
