Senior Manager, Software Engineering (Android) - POS Payments Experience at Toast (United States)
Toast· United States·
Role details
Job description
Toast is driven by building the restaurant platform that helps restaurants adapt, take control, and get back to what they do best: building the businesses they love.
The Toast POS app is the central pillar of Toast's restaurant products. Every day, hundreds of thousands of servers, hosts, bartenders, and chefs use it to serve millions of guests. Android is the foundation of our POS stack. Toast even designs and sells its own specialized Android tablets, so we can build the best integrated hardware and software products.
Our POS Payments Experience team powers some of the restaurant's most critical workflows (checking out and taking payments) across a coordinated network of tablets and peripherals that are typically used 10-12 hours a day. The POS needs to work as fast as possible, and if the network has problems, it needs to keep running. Meeting these requirements means pushing our technology stack to the limits. The impact is tangible and direct: small changes in the tightest loops pay off many thousands of times over, improving staff job satisfaction, the guest experience, and the restaurant's bottom line.
We are seeking a seasoned Engineering Manager to lead the POS Payments Experience team. You will lead a high-performing team of engineers who work hand-in-hand with PM and UX, and partner across POS and Fintech teams. Engineers on the team also contribute to our web-based POS payments configuration experience.
A day in the life (Responsibilities)
- Drive delivery of business outcomes for POS payments, including planning, schedule, and execution
- Drive cross-team and cross-organization efforts, especially across POS and Fintech, with predictable results and excellent collaboration
- Collaborate closely with PM and UX to fill the team's backlog with actionable, valuable work
- Ensure end-to-end quality and delivery of software, including ownership of monitoring and production issues
- Partner with technical leaders to set technical direction and continuously improve architecture, codebase, and engineering practice
- Hire and develop new team members
- Coach individuals in professional and technical development
- Champion the use of AI tools and practices to accelerate development, improve team velocity, and pioneer new ways of building, setting the bar for what it means to be an AI-first engineering organization
What you'll need to thrive (Requirements)
- Experience leading and mentoring successful teams to drive predictable business results
- Experience delivering mobile products (Android preferred) to a large customer base, and working in mobile codebases with a large number of developers
- Strong technical background in Java, Kotlin, and Android that you use to guide your team's decisions and plans
- Experience managing a mix of core contributions and cross-team engagements
- Experience communicating technical designs and contributing to the design process
- Not afraid to get hands-on or go deep to help the team reach its goals, and you encourage high agency and exploring creative outlets
- A collaborative, solution-oriented approach with business and product leaders
- A desire to build diverse teams that win together and prioritize customer success
