Summary

Lead the architecture and development of agentic AI systems for pain reprocessing therapy and mindfulness interventions. Bridge clinical science and software engineering to build scalable, fault-tolerant AI-driven products in a regulated healthcare environment.

Job description

The Opportunity Join the team transforming how we treat chronic pain by addressing its root cause: the brain. Hinge Health is expanding beyond physical therapy to build a comprehensive Brain Health ecosystem. In this mission-critical role, you will lead the architecture and development of agentic AI systems that deliver personalized pain reprocessing therapy and mindfulness interventions. You will bridge the gap between clinical science and software engineering, building the engine that helps millions of members retrain how their nervous systems process pain.

What You'll Accomplish

  • Architect Next-Gen AI Therapies: Build and scale the agentic AI systems that power multi-session conversational therapy, ensuring they maintain context, demonstrate emotional intelligence, and align with clinical protocols.
  • Build a Unified Education Platform: Design the centralized service that delivers personalized pain science education and mindset strategies, adapting content to each member's therapeutic goals.
  • Drive Technical Strategy: Define the long-term technical vision for Brain Health in partnership with product and clinical leadership, balancing immediate delivery with scalable, fault-tolerant infrastructure.
  • Lead & Mentor: Act as a technical beacon for the team, mentoring engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence, and driving cross-functional collaboration across data science, clinical, and platform teams.

Who You Are

  • A Strategic Builder: You don't just write code; you architect systems that scale. You have a deep understanding of distributed systems and can navigate the complexity of building AI-driven products in a regulated healthcare environment.
  • A "Learn-it-all": You stay on the bleeding edge of AI and software engineering, constantly evaluating emerging technologies to optimize performance and improve the platform.
  • A Cross-Functional Leader: You thrive in multidisciplinary environments, translating complex technical concepts for clinical and product stakeholders to ensure our solutions are both clinically sound and technically robust.
  • An Owner-Operator: You take pride in your work, from architecture to production support, embodying a DevOps culture where you own the reliability and performance of your code.

Basic Qualifications

  • Have 4+ years of practical software engineering experience, including meaningful time shipping AI-powered products to real users.
  • At minimum a Bachelor Degree in Computer Science or related field
  • Have led the design and delivery of complex, user-facing products end-to-end — across product surfaces, backend services, and AI/ML systems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Have worked in early-stage or fast-moving, rapidly evolving environments, and have ideally built products from 0 to 1.
  • Are technically proficient in modern AI application development, with demonstrated depth in working with LLMs (prompt engineering, RAG, agentic systems, evals) and a strong fullstack foundation (e.g., Python, TypeScript/NestJS).
  • Take a product-focused approach to building AI solutions that are robust, safe, and genuinely useful in users' hands.
  • Have successfully driven cross-team alignment to get impactful work shipped, and work with influence over authority.
  • Have experience establishing engineering standards, system architectures, and development best practices — especially around evaluation, safety, and reliability for AI systems.
  • Thrive in fast-paced environments and can navigate ambiguity to deliver high-quality products.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Contributions to open-source AI or software engineering projects.
