Job description
TECHNICAL RECRUITER (R&D)
Edinburgh
WORDSMITH
Wordsmith is building the legal operations platform for in-house teams, and we are growing fast.
We believe in-house legal is becoming one of the most important functions in the AI era. Every business is moving faster, but legal work is still too often scattered across inboxes, chats, documents, and disconnected systems.
Wordsmith brings that work into one system. Requests come in from across the business, AI agents handle the routine, lawyers stay in control where judgment matters, and every step is captured as work happens.
We are built for in-house legal, not law firms. Our goal is to help legal teams move faster, reduce unnecessary external counsel spend, and become a function the business can run with.
More than 500 companies, including Financial Times, Safelite, Trip.com, Canva, Starling, and Sage, use Wordsmith. Backed by $100M from Index Ventures, General Catalyst, Highland Europe, and others, we are building one of the defining companies in legal AI.
THE ROLE
We’re hiring a Technical Recruiter to support hiring across our R&D organisation.
This includes Product Engineers, AI/LLM Engineers, Product Managers, and Designers. You’ll work across disciplines, partnering with leaders to build balanced, high-performing teams.
This is a hands-on role. You’ll need strong sourcing, good judgement across different roles, and the ability to run high-quality processes end to end.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Own hiring across engineering, product, and design
- Build strong pipelines through proactive sourcing across the UK and Europe
- Identify and engage high-quality candidates across multiple disciplines
- Partner with engineering, product, and design leaders to define roles and hiring plans
- Run end-to-end hiring processes, from role kick-off to offer
- Maintain a high bar on candidate quality and experience
- Improve hiring playbooks, interview design, and recruiting systems as we scale
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
- Experience hiring across engineering and at least one of product or design
- Strong sourcing ability and confidence engaging passive candidates
- Good judgement on different role types — you understand what strong looks like across disciplines
- Ability to partner with technical and product stakeholders
- High ownership and consistency — you keep processes moving and close roles
- Comfortable operating in a fast-moving, evolving environment
- Based in Edinburgh or willing to relocate
HOW WE WORK
We’re an in-office team in Edinburgh. We work together because it helps us collaborate closely and make better hiring decisions. You should expect to be in the office as your default.
This is a high ownership role. You won’t be handed perfect briefs or fully built processes. Part of the role is helping shape both.
We care about quality. The goal is not just to fill roles, but to build strong, balanced teams across engineering, product, and design.
This won’t suit someone who prefers a narrow or purely process-driven role.
WHY THIS ROLE MATTERS
The teams we build now will define the product for years to come.
Hiring across engineering, product, and design well is one of the hardest things to get right. This role sits at the centre of that.
WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT
- Competitive salary and meaningful equity
- Close partnership with engineering, product, and design leadership
- A strong product and engineering culture focused on ownership and shipping
- A role where recruiting is treated as a core function, not support
Why work at Wordsmith AI
- Culture & Philosophy: Described as a team of “lawyers and engineers blending two worlds.” Core operating principles include: “fewer, better people” (small, elite teams), relentless focus on simplicity, and building products that are so elegant they “feel like magic.” The company explicitly values judgment as the key differentiator in an AI-powered world.
- Growth Trajectory: A rare stage — Series B with $100M in funding, a small enough team that individual contributions matter every day, and early enough to shape how the company builds. Significant US expansion ahead.
- Work Environment: Hybrid (roles listed for Edinburgh and London). The hiring process is transparent and values speed: a 30-min screening call, a 45-min technical interview, a short take-home challenge (a couple of hours), and a culture interview.
- Funding Backing: Backed by the same investors who backed Figma, Stripe, and Canva — strong signal of ambition and long-term thinking.
- Impact: Working on a problem that is “genuinely new” — building the platform to run in-house legal teams, which is a category that did not exist before AI made it possible.
