The hr career ladder

People careers often start in a coordinator or recruiter role, learning how hiring and the day-to-day of a team actually work. From there you grow into a senior recruiter or a people operations manager who owns a real slice of the employee experience. Senior is where you take on the harder people problems and start shaping how the company works.

Above senior the path splits between specialist depth and broad leadership. You can go deep as a People Business Partner, a Total Rewards lead, or an L&D lead, owning one part of the function well. Or you can broaden into leadership as a Director, VP of People, and eventually Chief People Officer, owning the whole people strategy.

Senior is where people choose. If you want to go deep on one part (partnering, comp, L&D), the specialist track keeps you close to the craft. If you would rather own the whole people strategy and a team, the Director and VP path fits. Both are real ways up.
