Northern Virginia carries the state, and the hiring spreads across the DC suburbs: Arlington, McLean, Reston, Tysons, Herndon, Chantilly, and Springfield. This belt holds one of the densest data-center corridors on earth, which shapes the whole region. Across the 10 Virginia cities we index, these NoVa suburbs account for most of the open tech roles.

Accenture Federal, Appian, and Two Six Technologies hire across the DC suburbs, and they reflect what the region does: government software, enterprise platforms, and national-security tech. Many roles here favor or require a security clearance, which is a real differentiator, since a cleared engineer has access to work most candidates cannot touch. If you already hold a clearance, Northern Virginia is one of the best markets in the country for it.

The work skews toward defense, cybersecurity, and government software, with a heavy layer of cleared roles tied to federal contracts. Enterprise SaaS fills out much of the rest, and the data-center corridor adds cloud and infrastructure work. National-security tech is the region's specialty, so if that world interests you, few places have more of it in one metro.

Cost of living in the NoVa and DC suburbs runs about 3 percent above the national average, so the salaries are strong but housing eats into them. The clearance reality cuts both ways: it locks you out of some roles until you get sponsored, but once cleared it opens a stable, well-paid lane most engineers never see.
