ICEYE at a glance

ICEYE operates the world's largest synthetic aperture radar satellite constellation, selling all-weather, day-and-night Earth observation data and sovereign satellite systems to governments and businesses.

ICEYE designs, launches, and operates synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellites, the largest such constellation in the world. It sells the resulting all-weather, day-and-night Earth observation data and analytics to insurers, governments, and businesses, and sells complete sovereign satellite missions to nations that want to operate their own intelligence capability.

Job description

  • Senior Software Engineer (Networking)
  • Fleet Control & Satellite Communications - Fleet Automation
  • Espoo, Finland
  • Reports to: Engineering Manager of the Fleet Automation team
  • Permanent | Hybrid
  • Employment is subject to applicable security screening (incl. SUPO)

The Mission of the Senior Software Engineer (Networking) You will build the networking backbone that keeps ICEYE's satellites talking to the ground. Ground-to-space communication with our SAR constellation runs through the TT&C Gateway. This role plays a central part in evolving that gateway: the socket-level connections, the traffic shaping, the resilience mechanisms that keep communication alive over degraded, low-bandwidth, high-latency links. You will have real latitude to propose architecture and shape design direction, not just implement someone else's spec, and turn hard physical constraints like link availability, bandwidth, and latency into robust, automated software.

Who We Are

ICEYE delivers space-based intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities to governments and allied nations. This includes sovereign and turnkey ISR missions leveraging ICEYE's world-leading synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite technology, as well as access to data from the world's largest SAR satellite constellation. These capabilities enable partners to detect and respond to critical changes anywhere on Earth with unprecedented speed and accuracy, day or night and in any weather, supported by ultra high-resolution imagery and high-frequency revisits. As a trusted partner for defense, intelligence, security, and maritime domain awareness, ICEYE's near real-time data creates a tactical advantage for mission-critical operations. Designed for dual use, the platform also serves civil protection and commercial users for natural-catastrophe intelligence, insurance, maritime monitoring (including oil-spill detection), and finance, contributing to global security and community resilience. ICEYE operates internationally with offices in Finland, Poland, Spain, Japan, the UAE, Greece, and the US. The company has more than 900 employees, inspired by the shared vision of improving life on Earth by becoming the global source of truth in Earth Observation.

Expected Outcomes & Requirements

Outcomes

  • Play a significant role in the design and delivery of at least one TT&C Gateway evolution, with explicit trade-offs documented and reviewed with the team
  • Improve link reliability and fault tolerance over degraded or intermittent connections, measured through reduced dropped sessions, faster recovery, or fewer manual interventions
  • Stand up or improve automated anomaly detection and recovery procedures for satellite communication operations, reducing on-call/manual escalation load
  • Integrate the gateway cleanly with ground stations, antennas, and mission control tooling, closing at least one current integration gap
  • Raise the bar on code quality and delivery discipline through rigorous code review, automated testing, and CI/CD practices
  • Contribute to raising the technical bar of the team through mentorship of junior engineers

Role-specific Competencies

  • Deep networking mastery: socket programming, TCP/IP, application-layer protocols (SSH, VPN), routing, traffic shaping, and load balancing, with the ability to debug at the packet level and design for unreliable, high-latency networks
  • Proven track record of building and operating automated/distributed systems in production
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills: a structured, data-driven approach to diagnosing complex issues, identifying root causes, evaluating trade-offs and delivering practical engineering solutions
  • Strong proficiency in at least two of Python, Go, and Rust
  • Experience working in Kubernetes-native environments, with practical familiarity with Docker, as well as AWS or similar cloud experience
  • Keen interest and pragmatic experience using AI/LLM tools to assist software development

Key Competences

In addition to the requirements above, we evaluate candidates on these key qualities throughout the hiring process: Intellectual Firepower: Rapidly comprehends, structures and synthesizes complex information, draws accurate conclusions, and communicates them with clarity. Passion & Work Ethic: Brings sustained motivation, resilience, and high personal standards to every challenge. Team Player: Works collaboratively across teams, contributing to shared success, and engaging in constructive debate.
