Boston and Cambridge anchor it, with the two sitting a subway stop apart and sharing the same talent pool. Waltham, Somerville, Needham, and Lexington ring out from there and carry a lot of the enterprise and hardware work. Woburn rounds out the cluster to the north. The homegrown names carry a lot of the hiring: Whoop, Klaviyo, and Formlabs all grew up here. On the infrastructure and data side you get Snyk, Circle, and DataRobot, the kind of security and ML companies that came straight out of the local research pipeline. That pipeline is the real story, with MIT and Harvard close enough that a lab project becomes a startup and then an employer within a few years.

Roles skew hard engineering, the kind that wants a real computer-science or systems background rather than growth-hacking. Biotech tooling is a category of its own here, a byproduct of all the life-science research in Cambridge. Enterprise and infrastructure software fill out most of the rest. If your strength is deep technical work, this is one of the densest markets for it.

The talent density is unusual, and so is the price of living inside it. Cost of living runs about 28% above the national average, almost entirely because of Greater Boston housing, and that is the honest catch: salaries are strong, but rent and home prices eat a large chunk of the premium. What you get for it is proximity to the research that starts these companies, and colleagues who came out of the same labs. If you want to be near the front of hard technical work and can stomach the rent, it delivers.
