Job description

About Omi

Omi is building the next generation of wearable AI hardware — devices that live on you and work with you. We move fast, ship real hardware, and obsess over every millimeter.

The Role

Part-time Mechanical Engineer based in or near Shenzhen. You will help design enclosures and mechanical systems for our wearable devices, owning the mechanical side from concept through to factory handoff. Remote with periodic in-person sessions at our factory in Shenzhen.

What you will do

  • Design and iterate on enclosures, brackets, and mechanical assemblies for wearable consumer electronics
  • Create 3D models and 2D manufacturing drawings (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or equivalent)
  • Run tolerance stack-ups, fit and finish reviews, and DFM analysis
  • Coordinate directly with injection molding, CNC, and assembly vendors in Shenzhen
  • Own mechanical sign-off through EVT/DVT/PVT build cycles

What we are looking for

  • 3+ years of mechanical engineering experience in consumer electronics or wearables
  • Strong CAD skills (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or similar)
  • Deep familiarity with injection molding, CNC machining, surface finishing, and assembly processes
  • Experience working directly with factories in the Pearl River Delta
  • Able to be on-site in Shenzhen for key build events

Why work at Omi

  • Culture: “We build, ship, break things (then fix them), and push boundaries” – a fast-moving, founder-led startup in San Francisco. Team is small (~14 people) and highly selective.
  • Hiring Philosophy: The fastest way to join is to contribute to the GitHub repo (submit meaningful pull requests). Every current engineer joined this way.
  • Perks & Compensation: Roles listed with $200k–$300k salary + 1%–20% equity; in-person in San Francisco; roles include Co-Founder, Founding Engineer, Head of Taste, and Community Lead.
  • Mission-Driven: Work on technology that “changes how humans interact with AI forever” – focusing on memory enhancement and brain-computer interfaces.
  • Remote / Hybrid: Most full-time roles are in-person in San Francisco; an Ambassador role is remote/part-time.
  • Engineering Focus: Emphasis on open-source, hackathons, and bounties; the team uses Flutter, Next.js, Swift, Rust, Python, and firmware (nRF, Zephyr, C).
